We’re confused, because some say mineral wool, some say natural insulation and some even say leave the floors alone entirely and don’t insulate them?! 🤔

Meanwhile, the heating is on, the radiators are hot, but our little feet are not. 🥶

Living in an 1870s Victorian house means there’s always something new to learn, and apparently insulating your floors is no exception. We thought this would be a fairly straightforward job, but the more we read, the more conflicting advice we seem to find.

We’ve got suspended timber floors above our cellar, so the plan is to insulate underneath the floorboards while we still have access from below. It seems like a good opportunity to make the house a bit warmer and hopefully stop quite so much of our precious heat escaping into the cellar.

But then comes the next question: what do you actually use? And is spending a small fortune on sheep’s wool really worth it, or are we being completely taken in by the idea of a more natural material? 🐑💸

And even once we think we’ve settled on a material, there’s the small matter of how to actually hold it up between the joists. Netting? We didn’t realise floor insulation came with quite so many decisions. 🫠

We’re trying to find the right balance between keeping the house warm, looking after an old building properly and not spending money unnecessarily. Which, as anyone renovating an old house will know, is often easier said than done.

So if you’ve insulated the floors in an old house, we’d genuinely love to hear from you. What did you use? How did you hold it in place? Have you noticed a difference? And knowing what you know now, would you do it again?

Please help two very cold Victorian homeowners out. 🛟

Would you save 150-year-old floorboards if it meant playing a 3 week long game of Victorian floorboard Tetris? 🧩

We wanted exposed original floorboards on the landing, but years of electricians and plumbers having at them had left the landing in a bit of a state. So naturally, we started stealing boards from another room, hoarding every offcut going…just in case. Anyone else done this!?

What started as patching a few gaps turned into a much bigger job. And somewhere along the way, we bought a mitre saw.

Would you have tried to save the original boards, or would you have ripped them all out and started again? 👀

Also, any tips for sanding 150-year-old floorboards without absolutely ruining them? Asking for two guys who are in far too deep… #reno #floorboards #victorian #DIY #gaycouple

Did anyone else escape the DIY and disappear into the garden this summer? 🌿🌸🍄

Life has been pretty wild since getting the keys, and it’s been in this garden that we have found peace amongst the chaos of the house and realised that maybe the odd DIY disaster (like Will putting his foot through the ceiling) isn’t worth getting too worked up about...!

We’re so grateful for this little haven. Even if the bindweed has other plans. #garden #reno #flowers #outdoors #diy

What does ‘Practical Magic’ have to do with our Victorian house? 🪄

Well, it might have just given us the answer to what to do with our bullnose corners…

Enter: the quirked corner (as seen in Sally’s bedroom in Practical Magic)

But before we commit to anything, has anyone reintroduced quirk corners into their Victorian house before — because we have absolutely NO idea how to do it 😂

Or, failing that, how have people solved the issue of crackage where the wood meets the plaster on rounded/bullnosed corners?

Share your practical magic tips below 👇✨ #reno #bullnosecorners #victorian #limeplaster #diy

Who knew owning an old house would be this complicated!? 😬

We’ve taken the plunge and gone for lime in the rear bedroom — the room with the worst plaster in the house. We are really hoping we haven’t just spaffed loads of money up the wall! 👀

Now comes the next debate: what on earth do we paint it with? 🤔Old-house people… tell us what products/brands you used on your lime walls in the comments below!👇#limeplaster #gypsum #plastering #victorian #gaycouple

We now have nowhere to escape the DIY 🫣 After weeks of dust, scaffolding, rewiring, discovering 150 years’ worth of surprises and spending far too much time at B&Q, the house is finally ours to actually live in. Is it finished? Absolutely not….not one single room. 🫠 But there are now beds, boxes, wine and two very tired (and extremely lucky) homeowners inside it, so we’re calling that progress.📈

Thanks all the friends and family who helped! #reno #dıy #victorianhome #gaycouple #renovation

🆘 So… we thought we’d finally made a decision. Then another plasterer told us we were completely wrong. 🫠 We’ve now had VERY different opinions on whether our Victorian house needs lime plaster, whether gypsum is actually a problem, and whether spending considerably more on lime is genuinely necessary. We’re no closer to knowing what to do, so we’d love to hear from anyone who’s tackled this in an old house — what did you go for, and would you do the same again? 👀 #plaster #plastering #limeplaster #lime #reno
