I’m stoked to announce my first poetry collection, IN THE PALACE OF THE PRESENT MOMENT , will be coming out soon from Prickly Exports and publisher Devon Gallant.

This is the 2nd publication by Prickly Exports, the first being 666 5th Avenue, by my dear friend, the best-selling poet, novelist and painter Simon Occulis.

For the launch, (June 21st Bar Le Record 8:pm) Occulis will perform poems ‘together’ - team style!

But wait, there’s more…

...performing with us will be none other than the inimitable Sophie Dufrense!

Nous étions à La nuit blanche (@nuitblanchemtl) à Montréal samedi dernier pour vous offrir notre 𝑩𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒂𝒅𝒆 𝒅𝒆 𝒍𝒂 𝒑𝒐𝒆́𝒔𝒊𝒆 ! 🌨️❄️

Les poètes Hélène Bughin (@hipsterlene), Jonathan Charette (@_jonathancharette), Nathanael Jones, Princesse Lamarche (@prncssprt), Willow Loveday Little (@willowloveday), Rowan Mercille et Hector Ruiz (@hruizmarche) ont distribué plus de 400 poèmes aux Montréalai·es qui ont parcouru la ville jusqu’aux petites heures du matin. Iels ont aussi performé leurs textes dans l’espace public pour animer cet événement iconique de la vie nocturne.

✨ Le projet 𝑷𝒐𝒆́𝒔𝒊𝒆 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒅 𝒍𝒆𝒔 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒄𝒔 vise à créer 25 activités poétiques en extérieur, dans différentes villes québécoises et canadiennes, en collaboration avec des organismes culturels ou communautaires et des artistes locaux. L’initiative a pour but de faire entendre la poésie dans l’espace public et de la faire rayonner à l’échelle pancanadienne. Nous remercions le Conseil des arts du Canada pour son soutien.

Dans le cadre de notre projet « La poésie prend les parcs », nous vous offrons cette initiative originale où six poètes circuleront sur le site extérieur de Montréal en lumière pendant la Nuit blanche afin de lire et distribuer des poèmes aux passant·es.

Rejoignez-nous le samedi 28 février de 22 h à 2 h aux alentours de la Station Place-des-Arts pour profiter d'un peu de beauté et de chaleur poétique durant cet événement rassembleur.

In Fanfiction Is for Teenage Girls Anne of Green Gables goes on a girl-lit murder spree, Scheherazade confesses her love for Esther, and the narrator picks flowers from A Child’s Garden of Verses for her bouquet. We often characterize girlhood in terms of a sort of mute romanticism that mystifies the mundane and domestic. Shute’s poems flip this restrictive model on its head. Girlhood is about imagination with no holds: Shute muses that the Hunger Games “doesn’t work in a gymnasium [ because] it’s better as an outdoor game” and “It’s surprisingly easy to escape minotaurs. They’re great with mazes, but have no concept of doors.” In one poem, the two towers are set up in reference to 9/11, before being intentionally conflated with the ones from the Lord of The Rings. In this way, the collection encourages us to see the possibility in everything. Chock-full of wordplay, wit, and Shute’s trademark love of linguistics, Fanfiction Is for Teenage Girls is a rollicky ride through poems more cutthroat than coquette, less girl dinner than girl feast, and as dreamlike as any teenager could imagine.

Kirsten Shute lives in an airplane-ridden midsection of Tiohtià:ke/Montreal. Her latest schooling was a BA in linguistics from Concordia University. Poetry of hers has appeared in the journal Soliloquies, several Twigs & Leaves anthologies, and the chapbook Songs of Irrelevance. You can find her words and pictures on Instagram at @kirsten_shute_writing and @kirsten_bead_batik. She is currently working on her first novel.
