This weekend’s recap is jam-packed! Friday started off strong with adventures in @stauntondowntown during a scavenger hunt coordinated by our amazing Director of the Institute for Engagement and Impact @3angelam2 👏Groups of students delegated roles to each other and visited with local businesses and orgs to listen intently to insights from community members and they even got to sample some gelato along the way 🍦(Thanks @thesplitbananaco 😉)

Also on Friday at the Eastham Center, some students had the opportunity to present to our Board Members about their experiences with Expedition Day field trips! 🦒

Friday night our volleyball team won at home! 🏐 SGA organized face painting and fairy hair extensions at the game!

Saturday, students got to attend the fabulous @stauntonpride festival at Gypsy Hill Park! 🏳️‍🌈

Saturday night was the Homecoming dance and students were looking spiffy! ✨

Sunday, students got some fresh air and embarked on a hike with Mr. Snyder in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains ♥️🥹

We are all set up at the @stauntonpride festival at Gypsy Hill Park! Today, we are featuring a mobile exhibit designed by one of our staff, Shane Woods, about LGBTQ+ history, as well as the history of civic engagement during Wilson's presidency. Come by, make a button, and learn some history on this beautiful fall day!

In late February, the historic dresses in Remember The Ladies will be taken off display to rest and replaced by new ones! One of them is this gorgeous wedding gown from 1881. Before she can go on display, she needs some time with the conservator to patch up a little damage. But first she needed a spa week! #weddingdress #fashionhistory #vintagewedding #textileconservation

I know a place. ✨

Downtown Staunton isn’t just a backdrop…it’s the whole feeling. Every brick, every corner, every golden-hour alleyway has become part of the stories we get to tell here. When someone says they want to find somewhere special to explore, this is always where I take them.

Because it’s not just a pretty town. It’s a place that means something, to me, to the women who step in front of my camera, and to everyone who’s ever felt a little more themselves walking these streets.

We’re lucky to get to explore it the way we do. And I’ll never stop showing it off. 🤍

Come explore it with me, Staunton is waiting. ✨ #visitstaunton #stauntonva #downtownstaunton

I am BEYOND excited to share what I have been working on behind the scenes this past month. I am designing an exclusive line of art for @wilsonpreslib exhibit “Remember the Ladies: Fashion, Freedom, and the Fabric of a Nation” (isn’t that title fantastic👏)

I received a behind the scenes tour, and took many photos of their beautiful articles of historical clothing to get inspiration. Big thank you to Andrew Phillips for answering all of my questions and showing me the exhibit.

This is just a sneak peak of the artwork- one complete and the other as drafts. I can’t wait to share the rest. If you have not seen this exhibit honoring the lives of women who helped shape not only our country but our little city of @visitstaunton make plans!! The outfit at the center of my completed piece was made by a local university student❤️🥰👏

And stay tuned for the release of this exclusive artwork, which will only be available for sale at the @wilsonpreslib gift shop.

Presidential history, impressive horsepower, and one very successful souvenir negotiation. 🐑

The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum in Staunton gave us plenty to explore. The Pierce-Arrow was the showstopper: visible through the glass from outside, but even better up close.

The women’s clothing exhibit we visited was another interesting stop, and the garden offered a pleasant pause between museum browsing and the gift shop.

The basement WWI trenches bring sound and vibrations into the experience. It’s a serious, memorable exhibit, but worth considering carefully for children sensitive to loud sounds.

Parking was easy, and the restrooms were clean and right at the beginning of the museum tour. Some exterior steps were closed during our visit, so keep an eye on the footing.

We missed the house tour and couldn’t wait for the next opportunity. Toddler patience has its own operating hours.

Then Wilson’s White House sheep became a persuasive souvenir argument. A sheep—and a toy plane—came home.

Our verdict: worth the visit. Sheep and all.

Which would win you over first: the car, the garden, or the gift shop?

We came for history. We left with a sheep. 🐑

At the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum in Staunton, the Pierce-Arrow was the showstopper. It’s visible through the glass from outside, but the close view earned some lingering.

The women’s clothing exhibit was a pleasant surprise. The basement WWI trenches offered a more serious moment, with sound and vibrations that could feel intense for sensitive children.

Outside, we enjoyed the garden and its history. Some footing was uneven and exterior steps were closed during our visit, so follow the open paths.

The practical wins: easy parking and clean restrooms at the beginning of the museum tour. We missed the house tour by about half an hour and couldn’t wait. Toddler patience has its own operating hours.

Then came history books, local crafts, and sheep in the gift shop. Wilson’s White House sheep became a persuasive souvenir argument. A sheep—and a toy plane—came home.

Our verdict: worth the visit, with plenty for the grown-ups and a little gift-shop diplomacy.

Now THAT is a retirement gift. 🚗

Woodrow Wilson liked his 1919 Pierce-Arrow so much that his friends purchased it for him when he left office in 1921. An excellent understanding of the assignment, if you ask us.

The car was one of our favorite stops at the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library & Museum. You can see it through the glass from outside, but getting close to it was what made the impression. The big wheels, polished metal, and presidential details have a way of turning “we’ll just have a quick look” into some enthusiastic lingering.

There’s another delightful detail: Wilson never had a driver’s license. He was clearly a very committed passenger.

The museum says the engine remains in working order, and the presidential seals on the rear passenger doors add another reason to look closely. We enjoyed the whole museum visit, but this car earned a little extra time of its own.

Our verdict: history with horsepower, and well worth a closer look.

Behind Woodrow Wilson’s birthplace, we found a garden that looked different from its historical photographs. The paths and flowers are still lovely, but the intricate boxwood shapes that once defined the space are gone.

The garden’s interpretive sign tells the story. Charles F. Gillette designed the formal garden in 1933, and its boxwood patterns became a backdrop for weddings and parties. Blight was found on the property in 2015. Hundreds of English boxwoods were removed the following spring.

That history changed how we saw the space. What first felt like a small open garden, became a garden with a past you can read in the plan, the sign, and the paths under your feet. The museum has also used the grounds for archaeological work that adds to the story of the people who lived and worked here.

We enjoyed wandering through with the Littlest Wayfinder. Some older stone surfaces are uneven and a few stair areas were marked during our visit, so we simply slowed down and followed the open route. It was a worthwhile pause between the museum and gift shop.
