In just a few days, Israeli voters will head to the polls to elect their next government. But who actually gets a say in the decisions that government makes?

Millions of Palestinians in the occupied Gaza Strip and West Bank, including East Jerusalem, live under Israeli control without the right to vote in Israeli elections. Neither do non-citizen Syrian Druze in the occupied Golan Heights, or Lebanese living in areas of southern Lebanon under Israeli military occupation.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of Israeli settlers living on occupied land in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights enjoy full voting rights. They can elect the very government responsible for maintaining the occupation and determining the future of the people living alongside them.

In the occupied West Bank, an Israeli settler can cast a ballot while a Palestinian living just down the road cannot.

Canada must not treat these elections as an opportunity to hold back on sanctions.

The limited acknowledgment by Minister Anandasangaree reflects the pressure the government has faced from thousands of participants in IJV’s letter campaign and NCCM’s and CJPME’s sustained advocacy. The minister has been compelled to respond, but has yet to correct the public record. A private assurance to one organization does not resolve the government’s public conflation of anti-Zionism with antisemitism. The report remains on the government’s website, where it states:

“Antisemitism, which includes anti-Zionism, is not always obvious,”

“Contemporary manifestations of antisemitism [include] anti-Zionism.”

Therefore, government officials and pro-Israel advocacy groups that seek to discredit Palestine solidarity can and will continue pointing to that uncorrected language as the government’s position.

The letter also leaves the central issue unresolved. Saying that not all criticism of Zionism is antisemitic does not clearly affirm that anti-Zionism is itself a legitimate political position. In fact, the letter does not address anti-Zionism at all.

It is possible to be proudly Jewish and stand in solidarity with Palestinians. Sarena Sairan (Executive Director, United Jewish People’s Order) explains why pro-Palestinian Jews must not be erased and how solidarity, justice, and human dignity are rooted in Jewish history and ethical traditions. Comments promoting violence or vulgarity will be deleted.

Thank you to everyone who came to Sounds and Solidarity! After expenses, we collected $1,000, and a generous member who chooses to remain anonymous has matched that amount. We’re sending the amount of $1,000 to each of the Elham Fund and the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music, both wonderful organizations sending funds directly to Gazans in need.

The sun is shining in Toronto and it’s looking like a good day to wear cute shoes, call a couple friends and hand out some flyers calling for the city to adopt an ethical investment and procurement policy! Click the link in our bio for a PDF you can print at home.

Advance voting is taking place in Toronto between Tuesday, October 6 and Sunday, October 11, which means it’s really important this week to get the word out about CEIP and our policy proposal. Remember to email candidates about where they stand on human rights!

Three years into Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza, passive mourning alone is not enough. We remember those killed, stand with Palestinians resisting displacement and destruction, and recommit ourselves to ending Canadian complicity, apartheid, occupation, and Zionist domination.

Ward 4 candidates respond to a question about ethical investment and procurement at an all-candidates meeting inside Roncesvalles United Church on October 2nd 2026.

The CEIP encourages all eligible voters to attend their local all-candidates meetings or email candidates to ask if they would support a motion requiring the City of Toronto to avoid doing business with, or investing in, corporations and other enterprises that are directly linked to severe violations of internationally recognized human rights.

Check out the links in our bio for an email template you can use and a copy of the proposed policy.

*Quick correction: the auto-generated captions should say “human rights“ instead of “youth crimes”

IJV BDS Toronto & York Region, @ifnotnowtoronto, @worldbeyondwarcanada, The Canadian Arab Federation (CAF), @scan_toronto, Palestine Network - Shining Waters (PalNet SW), Jews for Tikkun Olam (J4TO), @torontocentre4palestine, the Jewish Faculty Network UofT, @winchevsky, @torontopalestinianfamilies, @parkdalehighparkforpalestine, @justpeaceadvocates, @etobicokesouthforpalestine, @surj_toronto, @davenport4palestine, @ontariopalestinianra, @canadabdscoalition, South Asian Women and Immigrants Services (SAWIS), and @ur4palestine have joined forces to create Toronto’s Coalition for Ethical Investment & Procurement (CEIP).

CEIP’s aim can be stated simply: we demand that the City of Toronto end all business dealings with corporations that are linked to severe human rights abuses, such as genocide, ethnic cleansing, apartheid, illegal military occupation, mass surveillance and mass incarceration. Ending the City’s business dealings means no more investments of public funds, and no more purchases of goods and services from human rights abusers.

With your help, we’ll be working to make ethical investment and procurement an issue in the upcoming municipal elections.

Visit the links in our bio to read CEIP’s proposed policy statement and an email template you can use to contact candidates.
