Thrilled to see our (@peabodyessex) artwork dressed and on display tonight in the Inventing Isabella exhibition at the @gardnermuseum. Heartfelt congratulations to my colleagues @dsgreenwald and @ericahirshler for mounting this intriguing and inspiring exploration of Gardner’s self-fashioning! #isabellastewartgardner #inventingisabella #pemfashionandtextiles #charlesfrederickworth #bostonfashion #pemfashionandtextiles #artandfashion #fashionhistory #1880sfashion #windsorconservation

The division of cultural resources had an exciting #unboxing of our George Washington suit, which has been in storage for decades due to its delicate state. This silk suit is one of two suits believed to be worn by Washington on his Inauguration Day in 1789. With the help of Windsor Conservation group, we were able to carefully unpack and assess its present condition.

This artifact was accessioned as part of the Washington Association of New Jersey collection in 1933. Before it was properly conserved in 1992, the suit spent a lot of time on display at the historic Ford Mansion, Federal Hall, and at Headquarters Museum.

🔍You can learn more about this spectacular suit on our blog where Museum Technician, Amy Hester, takes us on a tour of the provenance records, conservation reports, and history of this famous garment. You’ll enjoy rare close up views that only textile conservators see. 🔎

This week marks the 48th annual @costumesocietyamerica national meeting. This meeting was especially significant for me personally. I attended my last meeting as a CSA board member, caught up with good friends whose own lives have taken new twists and turns and got to see Dr. Karen Turman (Harvard prof) deliver a super engaging keynote on #Prince. But that was just the icing. The cake was being recognized with my curatorial colleagues @madeliefhohe & @pbrmusings with The 2022 Richard Martin Exhibition Award for our exhibition Made It | The Women Who Revolutionized Fashion. This exhibition was mounted and on view entirely during the pandemic. It was also the result of many many people’s efforts and together we surmounted every hurdle that stood in the way. First and foremost, thank you to our colleagues at @kunstmuseum.nl whose original exhibition Femme Fatales | Strong Women in Fashion was the impetus for the 2020 adaptation. They not only empowered us to make a show for our audience but they also graciously lent us 60 ensembles and sent them overseas with no courier! We did all the dressing and mounting via zoom or through photo & video review. If you are looking for a museum partner seriously, look no further! The KM team was a dream to work with. Additionally, the AMAZING PEM team banded together during a tumultuous period to devise new installation techniques and respond to changes in staffing, technology and budgets. We also pushed forward just about every kind of online content we could. Thank you all! This exhibition is the result of your collective energies, passion and fortitude. It is an honor to do this work with you.
