I am thrilled to share that my photograph has been shortlisted for the Royal Meteorological Society’s Weather Photographer of the Year 2026! Out of thousands of incredible entries from across the globe, my shot made the final selection. The official judges’ winners and runners-up will be revealed on 17 November, but the Public Favourite vote is officially open right now. Take a look at the shortlist and vote for whichever image catches your eye the most—though if mine earns your vote, I’d be hugely grateful! https://www.rmets.org/weather-photographer-of-the-year/photos/1759833?g=1759737 #rmets #photocompetition #weatherphotographeroftheyear #weatherphotography #weatherphotography

There are lots of apps telling you about solar storms and how strong the display will be … however the weather is an equally important component! If it’s cloudy you won’t see it! ☁️

Our favourite way to check for clear skies is to check webcams and the best app we have found for this is @windy_forecast. Showing you locations with webcams around the world! 🎥

Not ONLY does it have webcams, its main function is as a weather forecast and there are lots of different overlays that show both current weather and the forecast! ☀️☁️

The reason we like webcams is that forecasts are often not accurate and they are a useful tool for cross checking before you commit to a hike or an aurora hunting adventure!

We have seen the Northern Lights a few times but nothing comes close to the display we saw from a village called Skittenelv just outside of Tromsø - 11th February 2026 💡🌌 on this instance it was as strong as it is on camera as it was to the eye 👁️

What are your favourite apps for Northern lights season! Comment below ⬇️

As I mentioned in my last post, today I’m sharing a game-changing Windy app tip on how to track the most crucial factor during any Aurora hunt... 🌌
Clear skies! (Or at least partially clear skies 😉).
Watch until the end to see exactly how to do it! ❤️

🛠️ Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Open the Windy app.
2. Locate the closest town or your current position on the map and tap on it.
3. A bottom panel with the weather forecast will pop up.
4. Crucial Step: Switch the forecast view source to Meteogram! 📊

💡 Why Meteogram?

The Meteogram shows you the exact vertical distribution of clouds and how dense they are, along with super useful parameters like the cloud base.

Pro-Tip: Besides checking the Meteogram itself, I always cross-reference it with two essential layers: Cloud Coverage and Cloud Base. ☁️✨

💬 Let’s chat: Have you ever used Windy for Aurora hunting, or do you have another go-to app? Drop your favorites in the comments! 👇

People keep asking how I plan trips in an old Range Rover with no signal half the time.
Honestly, it’s mostly these apps and a full tank.

Where to sleep, how to pay tolls, cheap data outside the EU, and what to eat on the way, all on 6 slides.

Save it before your next road trip.
What would you add?
