As (many) students in #philly head back to school we’d like to take a moment to herald the eye-popping 858 desks and 841 stools that Building Heroes and a diverse group of 79 volunteers made this winter and spring for remote learning for #philadelphia public school families!
.
This was a truly herculean effort, from the #participatorydesign process of designing the desks and stools to the 57 delivery runs that team members and volunteers made to actually get the desks to families that needed them throughout the City. And the work influenced the design of desks in at least 3 other cities across the United States.
.
Over the next week we will be sharing more about the process, to recognize the tremendous contributions that people made but also to raise awareness about some of the design related challenges to #remotelearning that families helped us understand. This is important because many kids are not going back to school; remote learning is at least partially here to stay; some schools shut down today(!?!); and many of the things that we will share are relevant whether school is in person or not.
.
Congratulations and THANK YOU to everyone who made this possible at Tiny WPA, in the neighborhood and throughout the city from those of you who donated or volunteered to the families who provided valuable feedback and ideas to the Heroes who designed some awesome furniture and created a ‘factory’ to make sure that we could collectively make as many desks and stools as possible. We are lucky to know each and everyone one of you.
.
Apologies to a number of key Heroes who missed the group photo. Megan, Ian, and Kamaiyah, y’all are rockstars.

559 desks and stools completed thus far for #philly public school families! This is only a very small part of the Building Hero team, volunteers, and builders who have made this possible! Not to mention the many who have volunteered thus far to help distribute desks and stools and those who have donated to support the effort. Thanks everyone, y’all are stars. We still have quite a ways to go but, man-o-man, that’s a lot of desks and stools. Can you believe that stacked on top of one another, these desks and stools would be taller than the two #philly @comcast towers combined!!!!

Stacked on top of one another, the 300+ desks and stools that Building Heroes and volunteers have built for #philly public school families thus far are taller than both @comcast towers, longer than the #StrawberryMansion Bridge, and by themselves, the desks are taller than 37 giraffes. The materials alone, stacked ended to end, would be taller than the tallest building in the world, the #BurjKhalifa or longer than 12 @septaphilly buses!
.
Like all of the projects at @tinywpa , the #remotelearning desk and stool project is not just about meeting the incredibly important desk and stool needs amongst families in #philadelphia but also #workforcedevelopment: Building Heroes, staff and volunteers learning, growing…..honing design, fabrication, management, and entrepreneurship skills too. Accomplishing both goals without compromising the other is not only important but absolutely possible. The past couple of weeks Heroes have been working on their marketing and story telling skills, learning how to tell the story of their massive desk/stool building efforts quickly in compelling narrative ways while graphically upping their game for fast posts with a new tool for the team, @adobespark . Above are a few of the team’s creations! Some of the animations and image crops aren’t 100% accurate or working due to the bulk upload and Instagram’s constraints.
.
Many thanks to all of Heroes, volunteers, and donors like you who have helped make the work thus far possible. We’ve still got quite a ways to go but are grateful for all that you are doing for #phled families.

This is only a small part of the dream team of staff, Building Heroes, volunteers, gardeners, and neighbors who worked on the improvements and repairs to the Holly Street Neighbors Community Garden over the past four weeks. Yesterday was our wrap up build day at the garden and it was awesome to see and literally feel everyone’s excitement and pride, including @beabuildinghero team members. We are so grateful for everyone’s hard work and to be able to design and build TOGETHER, especially during these challenging times. We feel particularly lucky for the opportunity to support a space with such a tremendous legacy of activism, vision, and sacrifice. It is truly a space of love and #BuildingHeroes palpable pride yesterday was clearly a reflection not only of their great work but being able to contribute to this history, of being a part of something larger. Let us never forget Winnie Harris.
.
Many thanks to Mrs. Elizabeth Waring for being an amazing partner and making delicious snacks for everyone. Make sure you keep your eye out for the garden if you are walking/driving/riding down 41st Street. You can’t miss it.
