“And my final finish line is the final finish line of my life. I’m gonna use this body, broken, beat up, until I can run no more.” ~JP Run clubs across the Bay Area are coming together for something bigger than a run. My next stop was @mothersrunclub, led by Ben @koenigthefourth, here in Napa. They meet every Monday at 6 PM in front of Mother’s Tacos. All are welcome, whether you’re a beginner or looking to improve. And what makes this group special is what happens after the miles: sitting down together, sharing stories, laughter, and tacos. Community in its purest form. Before I could share the usual details of JP’s Backyard Ultra, a young woman approached me. She’s battling Stage IV colorectal cancer, a disease her father once faced and is now in remission. I knew then this wasn’t about race details and came up with something far more meaningful. She couldn’t run with us in the heat. But when the sun went down, she went out on her own and got it done, reclaiming herself, one step at a time. Adversity is a thread we all share. Often invisible. It takes courage to speak up, to be seen. And when we do, we realize we are not alone. That is the spirit behind JP’s Backyard Ultra, The Final Edition. We move not just for ourselves, but in solidarity, for those facing cancer, mental health struggles, disability, injury, or injustice. If you believe movement can serve something bigger than yourself, come join us. You don’t have to be an ultrarunner. Come hike a loop. Walk with friends. Volunteer. Form a team and fundraise.
