I’m high on this new, very Vinya-esque wine series called, “On-the-Spot.” It was inspired by @whatsarahdrinks of “Wine Talks Miami,” on a Monday in March when she interviewed the dashing attorney, Jason Hernandez, lead prosecutor against the extraordinary fraudster Rudy Kurniawan. The whole time, I was googly, oooing and thinking, “Could I or you or the most polished freak-of-nature taster spot the imposter wines?” Could you tell if a bottle of DRC was real by the way its sleek red fruits magically twirl in the glass or how its invisible hairs of acidity and sexy new oak seamlessly melt into one? So, here we have it, “On-the-Spot,” a wild tasting adventure to put our wine snob skills to the test!!!
🕵️‍♀️
First up is, beloved Miami icon, Vega Sicilia. Unico, Valbuena, and Alion will battle Ribera del Duero’s finest and finely underrated. We’ll discover why Vega Sicilia, is well, Vega Sicilia, but we’ll also, choke on our wine pride and realize that, sometimes, our favorite bottle of the moment is the less prestigious one (and that’s ok!) So, join me for a memorable experience filled with eye-candy mystery, big laughs, and above all, humility.

Dive into the heart of the Loire Valley, a place where wine’s rich history is interwoven with the elegance of historic castles and scenic vineyards. @loirewines.official

Check out this exclusive look inside the Bloom Big Vins de Loire trade event at Amara @amaraatparaiso, revealing the dedication and artistry that influences each bottle’s unique character.

Did you know? The Loire Valley is not only famous for its wines but also for its unique vine-training technique called “Cordon de Royat,” where vines are pruned to resemble the shape of an old-fashioned key, helping them thrive in the region’s varied terroirs! 🗝️🍇 #LoireVineTrivia

I love this region because it has impressive array of wine styles, ranging from crisp whites like Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre and Muscadet from the Pays Nantais, to elegant reds such as Cabernet Franc from Chinon and Pinot Noir from Sancerre.

You can also find delightful rosés, sparkling Crémants, and luscious sweet wines like those from the appellations of Vouvray and Quarts de Chaume. With over a dozen distinct appellations, the Loire Valley offers a diverse palette of wines to suit every taste! 🍷 #LoireWineVariety

Quick throwback to one of my favourite recent events: Hosting @winetalksmiami with Jason Hernandez, who was the lead prosecutor on the Rudy Kurniawan case. I first met Jason at a party hosted by @lipoffcory and had SO many questions. It was so fun to dive into the case with this amazing group of Miami trade. I’m starting to work on the next event (and am always open to ideas!) which will remain open and free to all in the local trade. Thank you @quepasamanda @lisbetvioleta of @amaraatparaiso for hosting, and thanks to all who came along! And of course, thank you Jason for generously sharing your expertise!

In 2009, I drove the backroads of Provence with no phone, only a coffee-stained map and piecemeal directions to Château Simone. The importer had one instruction for me, "Whatever you do, don't be late!" I wandered pebbly roads in my Lego car, growing anxious as every turn became a dead end. I was late.

Palette is an appellation on the outskirts of Aix-en-Provence defined by its limestone hillsides, and Simone accounts for more than half of the vineyards there. Once you pass the unassuming gate, it’s like stepping into The Sound of Music — a sweet humming of birds and bees, exquisitely manicured lawns that the look painted, and West Wing-like quarters with a grand circular driveway. Over the years, I lost touch with Simone. I moved across the country, built new wine programs, chased new producers, new grapes and trends, and briefly stepped away from the front-facing side of the business. An estate I loved so dearly, I accidentally buried it beneath the ever-growing pile of what's next. Then, in 2024, I was at Amara in Edgewater. My friend and beverage director, Amanda Fraga was pouring Simone Rosé by the glass. At first sip, came tingles of joy and nostalgia and all the adventures of coming-of-age. I enjoyed a nice big glass, then another.

Owned by the Rougier family since 1830, Château Simone benefits from an easy microclimate, protected by pine forests and the cooling influence of the nearby Arc River. After the phylloxera crisis, the estate replanted vine by vine, and today many of its vineyards are more than a century old! Its legendary rosé is built from the same bones as the red — Grenache and Mourvèdre dominant with Cinsault, Syrah, and a handful of wonderfully obscure Provençal varieties. Collectors swear by drinking Simone Rosé with bottle age, but in its youth, it's breathtaking too. Packed with every shade of raspberry and blue, the fruit is exuberant, then it morphs into its mystery umami-self. Its color, a strawberry punch of sorts, completely flips the consumer model in which pale-pink reigns supreme. This stuff is glorious. I'm glad I reconnected with Château Simone, after all these years. This time, I won't forget her.
