Nuts About Conservation

P H O T O by @wingsinmotion

S P E C I E S: Elegant Tern (Thalasseus elegans)

Conservation STATUS: Near Threatened

I N F O: The Elegant Tern is a seabird with a thin orange bill and a shaggy black crest. It nests in just a few colonies in California and in Mexico, the biggest being tiny Isla Rasa in the Gulf of California. They fly above the ocean, and then plunge into the water to catch small fish, particularly anchovies. After breeding, they disperse far and wide in search of food.

ISSUES
With only about a dozen nesting colonies, human disturbance and feral animals, habitat degradation, and changing climatic conditions have reduced them further. Recent news showing illegal drone disturbance at the Bolsa Chica WetLands has highlighted their vulnerability and the devastating effect that this can have on their nests.
The breeding range is currently expanding northward into California, perhaps in response to the shifting distribution of anchovies.

CONSERVATION
‘Amigos de Bolsa Chica’ was formed more than 40 years ago to ensure the wetlands and surrounding areas were spared from development and thus allowed to provide suitable breeding habitat for endangered species. The Lowland Restoration Project, completed in 2006, provided three additional protected nesting areas with good success for many birds

How can we help?
-Keep drones away from sensitive nature reserves and other habitats birds rely on. While drones may be small, they are also noisy and unfamiliar to most wild animals. ⁣
-Report illegal drone use to authorities (you can report violations at Bolsa Chica, by calling CALTIP 1-888-334-2258). ⁣

⭐️ FEATURING: @wingsinmotion ⁣
⭐️ Elegant Tern (Thalasseus elegans)⁣
⭐️ USA 🇺🇸 ⁣
⭐️ Our hearts go out to the Bolsa Chica Conservancy community @bolsachicacon! Thousands of Elegant Terns were recently lost there after 2 drones illegally crashed on the reserve’s nesting island. ⁣
⭐️ How can we help nesting seabirds and other shorebirds? ⁣
-Keep drones away from sensitive nature reserves and other habitats birds rely on. While drones may be small, they are also noisy and unfamiliar to most wild animals. ⁣
-Report illegal drone use to authorities (you can report violations at Bolsa Chica, one of the last remaining coastal wetlands in southern California, by calling CALTIP 1-888-334-2258). ⁣
-Keep dogs off the beach and nature reserve trails (and always leashed where permitted). ⁣
-Carry out your food waste and garbage to avoid attracting predators that will eat adults, chicks and eggs.⁣
-Do not cross roped off areas or chase nesting birds to get a closer look - give them the space they deserve, and document them from a safe distance. ⁣
-Do not operate vehicles on beaches with nesting birds. Vehicles, including ATVs and bicycles, can disturb these sensitive birds, destroy nests, crush chicks, and damage habitat.⁣
-Leave driftwood and other beach wrack (such as seagrass, kelp, and marine algae) on beaches. Nesting seabirds and shorebirds, along with their chicks find food within the beach wrack and use driftwood for protection from predators and as shelter from harsh conditions.⁣
