“Making a difference through winter activities.” We enjoyed giving Sean Adams from @wcbsnewsradio880 a tour of Winter4Kids out here in Vernon, NJ - you can check out an excerpt from his interview with our founder, Schone Malliet here.

VERNON, N.J. (WCBS 880) — High up in the mountains of northern New Jersey there's a ski slope like no other – one that Peter Pan might enjoy. “All of this is just for kids – no adults get to ski here. No public. Only for kids, it's a sacred place,” says Schone Malliet. As WCBS 880’s Sean Adams learned in this week’s “Stories from Main Street: Difference Makers,” Malliet founded a special ski program as a way to help inner city youth. “I grew up in a city in the Bronx,” he says. “I'm an asphalt kid.” Malliet never went skiing as a child but excelled in many areas. He eventually entered the Marines and his navigator was the first person to take him on the slopes. “Fell and fell and got up and fell, knocked a few people down, and I knew at that time I was never going to do it again,” Malliet said.
However, that wasn’t exactly the case. He kept skiing while he embarked on a successful career running tech companies. When he retired, he opened his non-profit at the old Hidden Valley Slope.

The program is called Winter4Kids and focuses on providing children with mentorship while changing their lives through winter activities. “Our customers are youth serving agencies. Schools, like Avon School or Helen Morgan – that's local here – or our schools from Newark and Elizabeth and Patterson, the YMCAs in New Jersey and New York,” Malliet says.

Children come up to the program and learn a variety of skills and may even pick up a new hobby – free of cost to their parents. Please check out our FB page for a link to the full interview.

We are excited to host this pre-Olympic event here at W4K on Feb 14th.
Thank you @njherald for highlighting the NorAm Cup Parallel Slalom Competition!
.
VERNON — The National Winter Activity Center, located at the former Hidden Valley Ski Area, will host a national ski competition next month featuring 120 of the top alpine skiers in North America.

The North American Cup, an series of regional ski competitions held at sites throughout the continent, will be featured here for the first time Saturday, Feb. 14.

The annual competition is being organized by U.S. Ski and Snowboard, the national Olympic governing body for ski and snowboard sports in the United States, and by the International Federation of Skiing. The two organizations are partnering with Winter4Kids, the nonprofit ski school that operates the National Winter Activity Center, to make the event possible.

The contest, a pre-Olympic competition that aims to showcase up-and-coming athletes preparing to compete on the national and world stage, will be open to spectators and will feature a head-to-head parallel competition and slalom with a knockout format in each round.

The participating athletes — 60 males and 60 females — will compete for prizes whose top award will be $75,000, the largest prize offering ever in this event. “Head-to-head parallel competition is an exciting event and we are thrilled to host with U.S. Ski and Snowboard to showcase the sport under the lights of our state-of-the-art facility,” said Schone Malliet, founder and CEO of the National Winter Acitvity Center, in a statement. “By hosting the NorAm Cup parallel event, we have been granted a unique opportunity to utilize our facility as an international stage for winter sports,” Malliet added. “In addition to introducing winter activities to children throughout the tri-state area, our goal is to bring top-notch competitive events to the tri-state area and help grow the sport.” You can find a link to read the full article on our FB page.
