Another wonderful and enriching Wax & Stacks for the books (pun intended!) Big thanks to everyone who joined us, to The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts @nypl_lpa and their incredibly knowledgeable and helpful staff for hosting us, to all our dedicated vendors who wheeled their crates to the UWS, and to the blizzard for holding off its commencement until today. When starting the BFRF almost 14 years ago in Williamsburg as part of @bkflea and @smorgasburg, never in our wildest dreams, would we’ve imagine to be loading into the Lincoln Center amongst @nypl and all the other cultural institutions who call it home. We are so appreciative for the opportunity.

Later post: Yesterday’s Maplewood Record Fair! Don’t know why it took me so long to make it to this one, but it was a true pleasure!

And very special that @winter_records finally has a spot!

Greg and I go back exactly 20 years. We met early summer 2005 at a party in a moment of kismet: Greg buys and sells records, and I had just been hired to organize Vin Scelsa’s overflow record collection. Over two decades the layers of people we’ve had in common has always been uncanny: my neighbor in Hoboken, Rutgers, Barnes & Noble, CMJ, WFMU, and we worked in the same neighborhood more than once, and technically again with my office around the corner from the fair.

Greg has had a huge impact on me professionally as well. About ten years ago he said what he loves about selling records and retail is “ the joy of the exchange/ transaction. Someone is looking for something special and you’ve fulfilled a need and made something good happen for them.”

This insight was an ‘ah ha’ moment for me while I was pivoting out of the radio/music business: transaction/retail as a joyful exchange. Using storytelling, instilling confidence in your customers so they’re happy with their purchase. He helped me realize what it is I loved about working in retail/sales and I went back to retail sales, this time in furniture before moving into real estate.

And Greg is great at it. At the fair someone found this Live Parliament Funkadelic record, and just as they were ready to pay, Greg says “Are you going to use the iron on insert?” It was a record that had fan swag inside - a decal that you iron onto a t-shirt. Then when they went to pay for the record, Greg told him to put good emojis in the caption, which they did: 🚀🪩🕺🏻

Not only did the customer walk away with a new unique product, there was joy in the exchange. Turns out Greg also has all customers put fun emojis in the Venmo captions.

Cheers to @winter_records and so glad we’re work neighbors again! Here’s to many more years of friendship!
