I'm grateful to AMC for submitting "Before The Sky Split In Two" for this year's Emmy Awards. This was a labor of love created for a scene in the final episode of Season 4 of Dark Winds.

Before The Sky Split In Two” brings the season's journey full circle in the final episode, with Bernadette Manuelito encouraging fellow Reservation cop Jim Chee to return home and receive a healing ceremony from Navajo Medicine Woman Margaret Cigaret. Throughout the show, it is usually the women who remind the men to honor their Native beliefs and traditions, grounding them in their higher selves. The Diné/Navajo culture is matriarchal, so it was very important that this song be created and performed by Native women. I’ve been a fan of Pura Fé for years and was happy to learn she and another female Native artist I admired, Geneviève Gros-Louis, were working together. They both resonated with my concept I presented, and the creation process was seamless as we shared this vision. Together, the three of us wrote the music and lyrics as a unit.

We recorded and mixed the song at Brook Sutton's Studio Nashville.

An additional anecdote I would like to share is: the night before the session, Pura Fé learned that her home and three reservation villages, which were evacuated, were about to be destroyed by huge fires roaring through the province. Her spirit was so heavy the morning of the session, but by early afternoon, she received a call saying that local firefighters had stayed behind. As soon as the fire reached the villages, the winds shifted, and the fire jumped across the road, saving three Native communities. She sang this song in a spirit of genuine thanksgiving. It was truly unforgettable.

"Before The Sky Split In Two" can now be streams on all the platforms like Apple Music, Qobuz, Tidal, Spotify, etc.

Harold and Maude are wondering what this latest edition (#249) of Air-Conditioned is all about. To gain clarity, I enlisted The Marx Brothers, John Prine, Tom Waits, Julie Andrews, and Dick Van Dyke, along with The Golden Gate Quartet, Alex Chilton, Slim Harpo, Elvis Costello, and Johnny Kidd & The Pirates.
Toots Thielemans rounded up Jim Pepper's group Everything Is Everything and P.D.Q. Bach offered to bring in a few stragglers in the form of The Byrds, Spirit, Rosalie Allen, Del Close, John Brent, Peter Erskine, and Lambert, Hendricks & Ross. Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort helped steer this musical clown car!!
Sooooo …. You may ask, “Where can I hear this?” Well, just click the link in the bio, and it’ll take you to the Air-Conditioned webpage where the latest episode and a handful of recent episodes can be streamed anytime. Thanks to all the great early rock, blues, and soul that came out of the Delta South, Memphis has always been a required pilgrimage for many touring rock acts. During the early 70s, Memphis’ live scene was especially strong, thanks to venues like The Overton Park Shell, Overton Square, and Ellis Auditorium that consistently put on great shows.

If one album cover captured the times, it was Trapeze’s 3rd album, You Are The Music, We’re Just The Band. The cover photo is from the Overton Park Shell stage, with the band performing before a thousand hardcore fans. To this day, I hear people proudly saying they were there and pointing to their faces in the audience.

This edition of Air-Conditioned is going to dive headfirst into some of the acts that graced our local Memphis stages and were played on FM 100 and WLYX-FM at Southwestern, during the early 1970s. On deck we have David Bowie, Mott The Hoople, Wishbone Ash, The Groundhogs, Cactus, Procol Harum, ZZ Top, Black Sabbath and local faves Larry Raspberry & The Highsteppers. Along the way, we’ll hear Steely Dan live at Ellis Auditorium in downtown Memphis and Billy Joel live in the studio in 1972 and … of course … Trapeze.

Sooooo …. You may ask, “Where can I hear this early 70’s rawk heaviosity?” Well, just click the link in the bio and it’ll take you to the Air-Conditioned webpage where this latest episode and a handful of recent episodes can be streamed anytime. As always, thanks for listening and the good feedback.

I’ve been in the mood for early-mid 70s Soul. The messages and the heart in so much of this music still has immediacy. I started with Donny Hathaway, an amazingly gifted singer, and quickly rounded up The Staple Singers, War, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Sly & The Family Stone, Ann Peebles, Isaac Hayes, Isley Brothers, Average White Band, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and some great live Marvin Gaye debuting the music from his then-new 1972 album What’s Going On. The flow felt great and, if you like this era of music, I know you’ll enjoy this edition of Air-Conditioned.

Most folks don’t know who Jesse Ed Davis is, but those who do know him to be one of the most distinctive guitarists of the late 60s and 70s. If you don’t know who he is, you will certainly know some of the great recordings he played on or his presence at George Harrison’s historic Concert for Bangla Desh. Every track on today’s Air-Conditioned will be something Jesse Ed Davis played on or produced, including Jackson Browne, John Lennon, Nilsson, John Trudell, Taj Mahal, Leon Russell, David Bromberg, Gene Clark, Bert Jansch, and selections from Davis’ own solo albums. It is just a small sampling of his impressive body of work. This show is a good’un! I think you’ll like it.

Remember, this episode is available to hear at 9 AM CST, Friday, February 27th. You don’t have to check Air-Conditioned only when it airs. If your schedule doesn’t permit it, it’ll be available to hear in the following month. If you use this link before this show’s airing, you will get last week’s show, which was actually pretty good, too. As always, thanks for listening and the good feedback.

Marlene Dietrich liked to mix it up. She wasn’t one to be boxed in, so she naturally was happy be a part of the weekly audio smear of my radio show, which I call Air-Conditioned. For this week’s edition, I have Suzanne Vega, Daniel Johnston, Uncle Walt’s Band, Beach Bunny, Shawn Colvin, Drive-By Truckers, Hawaiian folk-ensemble These Days, and Bill Lee belting out the goods from South Pacific. Also stirring things up are John Prine, The Beatles, Iris DeMent, Simon & Garfunkel, Jackson Browne, Hal Cannon, Tom Petty, The Rembrandts, Joni Mitchell, Jonas Fjeld, and Hazely.

Nice to see that two shows I’ve worked on, Hell On Wheels and Dark Winds, are in this Collider list of the 9 Most Criminally Forgotten Western Shows Ranked. That said, I would say Dark Winds is being discovered, as opposed to being “criminally forgotten." Season 4 begins airing on February 15th. It's a good’un!
