Just a Notebook
Writing and Drawing on Syrian Military Service
من سوريا دمشق إلى باريس … from Syria to Paris
This workshop is based on the Mandatory
Military Service Book, one of the bureaucratic
tools used by the fallen Assad regime to enforce
military service on an entire generation of Syrian
young men. Once a symbol tied to fear, the book
has now lost its legal authority, but its
psychological weight remains.
Participants work on their old Military Service
Books through writing and drawing, confronting
these past symbols of authoritarianism from a
personal and artistic perspective. The pages
transform from instruments of oppression into
spaces for free expression.
At the end of the workshop, the works are
collected, scanned, and compiled into a
collective book - preserving the experience and
turning the notebooks into a space for art,
memory, and healing.
Note: All interventions are made using erasable
pens to preserve the original documents from
any permanent damage.
