In 25/26 I worked on the UK unit of Ali G : Who Iz I? Now its not everybody’s cup of tea but I thought I’d do a quick post as there were several situations and scenes where we had to pull a 🐇 rabbit out of a hat 🎩 to get good Audio.

I Want to say to say a huge thanks to @bubblebeeindustries . They let us test out the their new Spacer Ball with wind protection. The spacer ball allowed us to have an incredibly light boom setup we could use inside and out paired with a @schoepsmikrofone CMC1 preamp and MK41 capsule.

A lot of the scenes consisted of Marks who were not in on what was going on.
So it was captured under the guise of documentary crew with Camera operators and a Boom Operator Following the action. Takes would run well over an hour at a time. So having a light boom setup made all the difference.

For the Radio Mic system we used @wisycom MTP60’s & MTP61’s.
Their small form factor of the 61 and 32bit float recoding capabilities added another level of confidence knowing we could get the Audio in any situation we were presented with. If cast or Marks wandered off or out of range, we knew we had a stable backup. In the next few slides we had to turn standard USB podcast mics into Wireless mics.

These mics needed to be practical, But wireless as to be hidden inside Ali G’s Gigantic blue Jacket which he would pull out and use with the Mark.
We used a @sankenmicrophonesfrance cos-11 inside the microphone body with a @wisycom MTP-61 transmitter and XL battery. The XL battery gave us 15 hours of continuous transmit and record at 32bit float outputting at 100MW if we need it.

Running the setup in this way allowed us hide everything inside the mic body at the start of the day. screw everything back together knowing that we had a days worth of battery life. The @wisycom app came in very handy allowing us to change all the settings without having to take everything apart

2026 Bag Update

The Audio Wireless DA224-MB. A tiny, lightweight RF distribution amplifier that allows us to run all our receivers through two higher gain antenna mounted to the bag or fins on a stand. The DA224 also has configurable RF filtering to prevent interference from frequencies outside the range of what you’re using.

This replaces the venerable DADM226. The first generation AW RF distro, which had a fixed, more wideband, filter, was considerably larger and probably twice the weight.

#soundrecordist #radiomics #productionsoundmixer

To replace the power distribution element on the old DADM226 this little Hirose power box is just this basic power connection box distributed by a few low cost sellers on eBay and Amazon. I’d usually try to use the known industry brands but this is just so cheap and compact.
