29 years ago today, the world woke to the news that Princess Diana had died.

Her tragic death would also become the inciting incident in one of my favorite films, the 2001 French classic Amélie.

Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet intentionally chose the historical news of Diana’s death to anchor the timeless whimsy of the film in a real moment in time the audience could relate to. I’ve always loved what that does for the movie - it grounds that heightened world in something real.

We’re reflections of the lives around us. Amélie’s desire to do good is reflected in real people like Princess Diana and Mother Teresa, whom the film itself references. To me, it’s almost as if grounding Amélie’s world in theirs shows us that we can bring a little of that same goodness into our own lives.

There are several references to death throughout Amélie - Princess Diana, Amélie’s mother, her father’s fixation on his own death, the drum major’s wife - but somehow the film continually finds its way back to life.

And maybe that’s part of its magic: even through the lens of death, we find our life.

Today we remember the beloved People’s Princess, Diana, and the unexpected place her life and death hold in one very enchanting movie.

And here’s an interesting film fact: the recreated news coverage in Amélie gives the date as August 30th, while Diana’s death is officially dated August 31st, 1997.

Country music legend, movie star, songwriter, philanthropist, and everyone’s favorite Backwoods Barbie, Dolly Rebecca Parton, died August 25th, 2026.

With a professional career spanning nearly seven decades, Dolly became one of the best-selling music artists of all time, giving us songs we know by heart and performances we’ll never forget. She made her feature film debut in the 1980 film “9 to 5,” writing its unforgettable title track. She went on to memorable roles in films including “Steel Magnolias” and “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”.

Beyond the talent, it was Dolly’s heart, humor, and humility that made her so beloved.

We visited her legendary Hollywood star and joined fellow fans in paying tribute to a true original.

We will always love you, Dolly. 💗

12 years ago today, Robin Williams left us and went back to his planet. 🖖

Robin was the comedian’s comedian, and one of our absolute favorites. He could light up the screen, transform every character into someone unforgettable, and make us laugh until we cried, while touching our hearts along the way.

From Mork & Mindy and Mrs. Doubtfire to The Birdcage, Good Will Hunting, Dead Poets Society and What Dreams May Come, his body of work was enormous. And we have a feeling his heart was even bigger.

Today we visited a couple of the Hollywood studios where some of that magic happened, told some bad jokes, and remembered someone who gave the world so much joy.

We love you, Robin. Nanu nanu. 🖖❤️
