Production has wrapped on “Chairman,” the debut feature from filmmaker Edem Kelman, starring British-Nigerian actor Ṣọpé Dìrísù alongside Samuel Adewunmi and Heather Agyepong. Filming took place in London and Paris. Dìrísù plays Duke, a man seeking to unite London's African diasporic community. As his ambitions grow, the consequences threaten both his dreams and the people who depend on him. The film explores displacement, belonging and the experiences of first-generation African immigrants in Britain. Kelman co-wrote the screenplay with Noah Reich, who produces for Two by Two Productions, alongside James Bowsher and Mike Goodridge of Good Chaos. The project was developed by Film4, the feature-film division of British broadcaster Channel 4, with financing from Film4, the British Film Institute (BFI), HiPo Productions, Amplify Capital, Head Gear Films, Metrol Technology and Bleat Film. Kelman, named a Screen International UK and Ireland Star of Tomorrow in 2021, previously directed “Express” (2022) and the BAFTA-nominated short “Terence” (2025). Distribution and release plans have yet to be announced. Screen International was first to report the news. #ChairmanFilm #SopeDirisu #EdemKelman #AfricanCinema

May God bless @primevideonaija and @firstfeaturesproject. So, earlier this year in a conversation with some friends, we were trying come up with names of promising and exciting new female directors who had directed at least 1-2 films. We struggled a bit. Because most of them were still training their creative muscles with short films. So, for this month’s WKMUp newsletter, I decided to put the data to test with 51 major debut films from 2021-2026 and their filmmakers, asking “Who Gets to Direct Their First Nollywood Film?” Worth noting that there are some filmmakers who have directed their first film which are yet to be released. Those were not counted. To count, the film must have been released in cinemas or on a major streaming service. The full results were received by WKMUp’s newsletter subscribers. You can subscribe at the link in bio for more exclusive closer look insights into select industry topics. #Nollywood

Nigeria has selected Damilola Orimogunje’s “Dear Ajayi” as its official submission for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards, scheduled for 14 March 2027 in Los Angeles, United States. The Nigerian Official Selection Committee, the Academy-approved body responsible for choosing Nigeria’s entry in the category, announced the selection after reviewing films submitted during its 1–31 August 2026 national call. Nigeria did not submit a film for the 98th Academy Awards after its committee determined that none of the entries met its selection standard. Written and directed by Orimogunje, “Dear Ajayi” is a Nigeria-Germany production set in southwestern Nigeria in the 1990s. The drama follows estranged sisters Ade and Titi, who are forced to live together while caring for their paralysed mother. Bimbo Akintola, Tosin Adeyemi and Lanre Hassan lead the cast. The film competed in September 2026 at Giornate degli Autori, the independent film programme held during the Venice International Film Festival in Italy. It received the Enrico Fulchignoni Prize and the Bisato d’Oro award for its cast and performances. The production companies include Nigeria’s 2o9ine Films, Depth and Optics Productions and Zynox Productions, alongside Germany’s Mayana Films. “Dear Ajayi” now enters the Academy’s international feature selection process. The 15-film shortlist will be announced on 15 December 2026, followed by the five Oscar nominees on 21 January 2027. #DearAjayi #NigeriaOscars #DamilolaOrimogunje #Nollywood
