In the latest issue of W&L Magazine, Erich Uffelman, Bentley Professor of Chemistry, reflects on the importance of showing up for students, fostering connections and finding joy in their success.

From cheering on the women’s basketball team as its longtime faculty mentor to leading students on research trips to the Netherlands, Uffelman has spent more than three decades building meaningful relationships with W&L students that often last long after graduation.

“Having Washington and Lee students in my life, both in Lexington and sometimes beyond graduation, has been one of my life’s greatest blessings.”

🎨🏀 Teamwork on and off the court!

We had the absolute best time last night hosting a private “dip” and paint night for the amazing Washington and Lee University Women’s Basketball Team!! The Generals brought their incredible team chemistry off the court and onto the canvas, painting Lexington’s iconic House Mountain 🏔️ Safe to say their artistic skills are just as sharp as their jump shots!!! Thank you for painting with us, ladies!! ⚡

A huge thank you to Muchacho Alegre for providing the perfect atmosphere and delicious food to fuel our creativity!!

Swipe through to see their masterpieces! 🏔️✨

I’m a big believer that anyone can become a better athlete. Yes, genetics play a role, but with the right development, intentional training, and a focus on moving like an athlete, you can significantly improve your athleticism.

Athletic movement matters in basketball. The more comfortable you become with these movements, the easier it becomes to learn and execute different skills and moves on the court.

Developing your athleticism gives you another advantage in the game, and it’s something you can continue to improve with the right work.

Had a great time getting in the gym with Washington and Lee signee Olive Bigham.

Olive is a former 2x All-State and 2x All-Conference player in the Carolinas, and she’s getting ready to begin her freshman season with the Generals.

What makes her such a tough matchup is her versatility. She can score on the block, put the ball on the floor, and stretch the defense with her shooting, making her a threat from anywhere on the court.

Excited to watch her take the next step at the collegiate level. Keep an eye on her this season, big things are ahead!
