Join us for our second public lecture on Thursday, October 8th, at 5:30pm (1303 Dunbar Hall, WMU)!

Are our addictions vices that we should work to free ourselves from? Drawing from her fieldwork on chemical exposure in Mexico City as well as from harm reduction activists, addiction researchers and other scholars, Elizabeth Roberts highlights the external forces that so often fuel the damage of addiction. As her neighbors in Mexico City suggest, the adverse health effects brought on by their dependencies on Coca-Cola, processed foods, drugs, and alcohol have more to do with the ongoing effects of the drug war and NAFTA than any personal failings. Guided by this thought, Roberts draws a line between vice that isolates and addiction that connects, making a case for sharing in the pleasures—and suffering—of dependency.

As we mark 25 years since the 9/11 attacks, @wmuchhs alumnus Dr. Alejandro Azofeifa (P.H.d ‘23, Interdisciplinary Health Sciences, Graduate Certificate Program ‘24, Addiction Specialization) is leading efforts to document the enduring public health legacy and critical lessons learned.

His research, titled “Twenty-Five Years After 9/11—Lessons from the World Trade Center Health Program,”was just published in the JAMA Network. It examines more than two decades of research, surveillance, and healthcare for individuals affected by the attacks.

His leadership on this publication exemplifies the accomplishments of interdisciplinary health sciences program alumni, whose scholarship and professional leadership continue to advance public health and inform policy and practice nationally and internationally.

Freshman year, I remember being so excited to model for a couple lines in a fashion show, while also having my own design line & style line. It blew my mind that I could just randomly decide to take part of something like that on campus.

The piece I’m wearing was modeled off the iconic Piet Mondrian, with notes of Georges Chakra (Gossip Girl Designer) & century old classical staples. I had initially intended to design this piece as a “met gala” prom dress, but was behind schedule.

When I set out to create a #PietMondrian inspired skirt, I knew finding where to start would be a struggle.

It was a complex challenge—to say the least—to figure out the optimal grid spacing, line thickness, pattern, structure, material selection, & Design For Assembly so that the Piet Mondrian rectangles would appear within the grid lines from any viewing angle/height.
See recent post on how it was made!
