A producer whose sound has always stood apart for me. A distinct character across records that don’t all follow the same musical direction.

J. Tijn started out making grime, then dubstep, before releasing techno through labels including Turbo, Untold’s Pennyroyal and WNCL Recordings. In a 2017 interview, he mentioned that the tracks outside the usual techno blueprint were often the ones he liked most.

That willingness to step outside the format is something I’ve always appreciated in his music. If his catalogue is new to you, there’s plenty to explore, including the Flingway collections on his Bandcamp.

Pangaea, the alias of British producer Kevin McAuley, emerged from the South West of England before moving to Leeds, where he became deeply involved in the city's developing dubstep scene. Having experimented with music from childhood using keyboards, tape decks and basic recording equipment, McAuley was inspired by the emerging sounds of dubstep after discovering the scene in Leeds around 2005. He became involved with the Ruffage night and, alongside Ben UFO and Pearson Sound, helped establish a new approach to UK club music.

In 2007, the trio founded Hessle Audio, which quickly became one of the most influential labels of the UK's post-dubstep era. Pangaea's early releases, including Coiled, Router, You & I and Hex, established his distinctive sound: rugged, atmospheric and rhythmically adventurous, drawing from dubstep, UK garage, techno, house and rave. His debut album, In Drum Play, arrived on Hessle Audio in 2016, further expanding his palette into stripped-back, experimental techno. After several years of development, he returned with Changing Channels in 2023, a more direct and dancefloor-focused record that showcased the evolution of his production. Through his work as both an artist and Hessle Audio co-founder, Pangaea has played a significant role in shaping the sound of forward-thinking British electronic music.
