Ben Noam Wolf (@wolf_noam), Memory Maps, 2023–2026, glazed stoneware, dimensions variable.

Ben Noam Wolf is an American artist based in New York and Connecticut. He holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. Noam has exhibited internationally, with shows at The Journal Gallery, The Breeder Gallery, and the Museo di Capodimonte, alongside performance commissions from MoMA PS1 and Night Gallery. His work has been featured in The New York Times, Artforum, and ARTnews.

An installation of ceramic vessels from an ongoing series called Memory Maps—subjective maps with no beginning or end —features glazed drawings wrapping around large, coiled, hand-built pots. The maps, without beginning or end, echo the island's form: space encircled by water, bounded yet brimming with lived experience. Together, these maps tell a story of subjective experience.

The installation is currently on view at the De Milly Armoury.

Meanwhile on Rhodes: “Where the Day Starts,” the second Biennale of Contemporary Keramics (BCK @bckeramics ) brings together 42 artists from 18 countries across some of the extraordinary historic sites of Rhodes’ Medieval City - on view until 31 October.

I have always had a particular penchant for ceramics - for this most ancient of materials, earth transformed by hand and fire, and for the extraordinary freedom with which contemporary artists continue to reinvent it.

Recently, at Rob Pruitt’s Flea Market project on Hydra, I met Ben Noam Wolf (@wolf_noam ) whose work I was delighted to discover is included in BCK.

His ongoing series Memory Maps (2023–2026) consists of large, hand-built coiled vessels covered in glazed drawings that function as subjective maps - without beginning or end. Restaurants, friends’ apartments, parties, concerts, hardware stores, chance encounters and seemingly insignificant moments become coordinates of a lived life.

I particularly love this idea: that the more personal a map becomes, the more universally we can recognise ourselves within it. Memory turns into geography - and the vessel itself becomes both landscape and archive.

The maps, without beginning or end, echo the island's form: space encircled by water, bounded yet brimming with lived experience. Together, these maps tell a story of subjective experience. These drawings depict the places and moments that anchor memory—a favourite restaurant, a best friend's apartment, a hardware store I frequented, a name-day house party, a concert on the beach, a rooster eating from a trash can, a fight involving bread and olive oil. The more personal they become, the more universal they are.

📍 Medieval City of Rhodes

Curated by Stamatia Dimitrakopoulos @kopse_ligo, Loukia Thomopoulou @loukiat & Anissa Touati @anissatowati BCK highlights ceramics as a dynamic artistic medium and a platform for intercultural dialogue across the Mediterranean. Drawing from Rhodes, at the easternmost edge of Greece, and its UNESCO-listed heritage, the project engages with the island’s light, geography and layered history.

Old Carpet Factory & Mnemosyne Projects opened the doors of the Old Carpet Factory mansion, recording studio & artist residency on Hydra Island for this year's Open House.

Hosted by Stephan Colloredo-Mansfeld, with cultural programming curated by Ekaterina Juskowski, the event brought together artists, writers, musicians, filmmakers and architects for a series of exhibitions, readings, screenings, performances, and conversations.

Opuntia, a site-specific marble installation by on•entropy @on.entropy (Niki and Zoe Moskofoglou); ceramic works by Vittoria Bernardinone @potteryinhydra ; and Ben Wolf Noam's Memory Map Jars, exploring memory, place, and belonging through ceramic.

Stefan Dotter presented Belonging(s), a photographic project examining identity, ownership, and attachment. ' The Paradox of Belonging and the Fragility of Attachment' discussion featured Dotter, architect Marilia Lezou, and curator Ekaterina Juskowski, exploring how memory, space, objects, and personal relationships shape our sense of belonging.

The literary program featured readings by Makis Malafekas, who presented excerpts from his latest novel Deepfake, now available at Hydra Book Club @hydrabookclub and Hunter Dukes, who introduced the second issue of Glotta.

The film and music program included a screening of 'Death Rides a Camel' the acclaimed 16mm "falafel western" by Andrew Kamel and Jaafar Al-Nabi, followed by live music from Kamel's forthcoming album.

Composer, conductor, audiovisual artist, and music historian Luciano Chessa @luciano_chessa joined the program, sharing aspects of his interdisciplinary practice. Chessa is known for works including A Heavenly Act, commissioned by SFMOMA, Piombo for Frances-Marie Uitti's 2bows cello, and Cena oltranzista nel castelletto al lago. His Orchestra of Futurist Noise Intoners (OFNI) was recognized by The New York Times as one of the year's most notable cultural events. @libraryresidency

Thank you to all artists, participants, collaborators, and guests who made this year's Open House a memorable gathering of art, literature, music, film, and conversation on Hydra.

From shadows of steel to shapes of clay. Welcome to the Armoury de Milly, a silent stone fortress tucked inside the Medieval City of Rhodes. Built in the 15th century under Grand Master Jean de Lastic de Milly, this austere monument once stood as a strategic military stronghold, a place designed for defence, iron, and the hard realities of a Mediterranean empire.
