Rach and I have had the pleasure of doing the past two sessions at Urban Surf, working one-on-one with adaptive surfer Mark Leslie.

Mark broke his neck playing rugby union in 2005- C/6 Incomplete Quadriplegic (so no movement below the waste and minimal movement above)

“The accident happened when I was 17 (now 38) playing rugby union for Oakhill College. I was always destined to be a rugby player and thought that that was my calling. It wasn’t until I found adaptive surfing that I found out exactly what I had been put on this earth for”

From rugby to recovery… and now back on the waves 🌊

This is Mark, up in Byron Bay competing in an adaptive surfing event.

After a spinal cord injury at 17, he spent years out of the water before finding his way back. Not alone, but with the right people around him.

Adaptive surfing is a team effort.
There are people guiding the board, helping through the breakers, and making sure every moment in the water is safe.

And when it all comes together, it looks like this.
Catching waves again.

“It’s the most professional setup I’ve ever seen.”

Mark is a close friend of Ashlea, and we feel lucky to be able to share a small part of his story.

Because sometimes, support looks like this.

Many continue further with Severe Bleeding & Trauma training, including tourniquet application, delivered in conjunction with industry leaders @tacmedaustralia
