Day 2 of Becoming a Chef 👩🏽‍🍳 | Back to the Basics

Day 2 began with me arriving at school, putting on my apron, chef’s cap, and safety shoes, and getting ready for another day of learning.

Everything we needed for the class had already been arranged on the tables for easy access. Soon, our chef instructor and his assistant arrived, and the lesson began.

Today, we focused on the basic foundations of cooking: seasoning blends, knife skills, kitchen organisation, and different types of plates used for food presentation.

Learning the art of seasoning

We started by preparing four seasoning blends:

- Cooking seasoning blend
- Seafood seasoning blend
- Butter seasoning blend
- Ginger and garlic paste

We listed all the required ingredients and received recipes to guide our preparation. Our instructor explained the difference between a recipe and ingredients, as well as how to use, store, and preserve each seasoning blend properly.

One lesson that stood out to me was that every step in cooking has a reason. Cooking is not just about following a recipe.

Our instructor reminded us that cooking starts with the chef, followed by the ingredients, utensils, and equipment needed for the task. A good chef must think ahead and prepare everything before turning on the burner.

Proper preparation helps produce better results. You cannot wait until you are already cooking or plating a meal before thinking about what you need. As chefs, we must learn to plan ahead, stay organised, and take responsibility for our work.

Understanding knife skills

After preparing and storing our seasoning blends, we moved on to practise knife skills.

I learned that good cooking starts with the basics. Knife skills are not just about cutting ingredients; they are also about safety, efficiency, consistency, and professionalism.

Our instructor introduced us to different types of knives and their uses, as well as the proper techniques for holding a knife.

We also learned how to secure a chopping board by placing a damp towel underneath it to prevent it from slipping.Another important lesson was keeping the chopping board properly positioned on the work -table for safe and comfortable

**Day 1 of Becoming a Chef 👩🏽‍🍳 | My First Day at Culinary School**

My journey to becoming a chef has officially begun! 🥹👩🏽‍🍳

On my first day at culinary school, I registered my name and received my apron, cap, book and pen. I was also given a booklet containing the school's rules and regulations, which we were expected to read and follow.

Once everyone was properly dressed according to the kitchen standards, our chef instructor came in, introduced himself and began our orientation.

One of the first things we learned was the meaning of *culinary* and *culinary arts*.

Culinary refers to everything related to cooking, while culinary arts involves the art and science of preparing, cooking, presenting and serving food.

But I quickly realised that becoming a chef is about much more than knowing how to cook.

We learned about personal hygiene, including keeping our bodies, nails and hair clean, maintaining a neat uniform, and practising food safety in the kitchen.

Our instructor also reminded us to remain open to learning, accept our mistakes, and be willing to take corrections. He emphasised the importance of punctuality, discipline, respect and coming to class with the right mindset, free from distractions.

One lesson that really stood out to me was that **there is no limit to learning.**

I also learned that our personality, attitude and willingness to improve will play a major role in shaping the kind of chefs we eventually become.

It's only Day 1, and I already understand that this journey will require more than passion. It will take discipline, humility, patience and a willingness to keep learning.

This is just the beginning, and I'm excited to see how much I will grow along the way. ❤️‍🔥

Welcome to my journey of **Becoming a Chef!** 🍽️
