~Beneath the soil, trees are connected by invisible threads — the Wood Wide Web, the forest’s secret network.

The Wood Wide Web reveals that a forest is not a collection of trees, but one interconnected being.

The “Internet of Plants” exists beneath our feet 🍄🌱
And one of the world’s most important living collections studying it depends on continued scientific funding.

The “Internet of Plants” 🍄🌱
Most people don’t realize that one of the most important biological networks on Earth lives underground — and depends on fungi, not fiber optics.

One of the world’s leading living collections studying this system is the International Culture Collection of (Vesicular) Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (INVAM), at the University of Kansas.

🧠 What is INVAM?
INVAM maintains over 900 living mycorrhizal fungal isolates, representing roughly 25% of described arbuscular mycorrhizal species. These fungi form symbiotic relationships with an estimated 80–90% of land plants, supporting nutrient exchange, soil structure, and ecosystem function.

🔬 Why this is unique
Unlike seeds or many microbes, mycorrhizal fungi cannot be frozen or archived. Each isolate must be continuously maintained on living host plants by trained researchers to remain viable.

Because of recent changes in available research funding, the long-term maintenance of this living collection now depends on identifying new, sustained sources of support.

If maintenance cycles are interrupted, unique fungal lineages — along with decades of validated scientific data — may no longer be available for future research.

Why this matters:
🌱 Food systems
Supports research improving crop nutrient efficiency and resilience.

🌍 Soil systems
Plays a critical role in soil structure, carbon cycling, and ecosystem stability.

🔬 Scientific reliability
Provides reference strains that ensure accuracy and consistency across global research.

At BrainForest Labs, we believe sustainable wellness and food systems start with protecting foundational biology. Preserving living research collections like INVAM helps ensure future science is built on verified, living systems — not assumptions.

Swipe through to learn how these fungal networks work and why long-term biological collections matter.

Over the last few weeks we have been running a photography group within the ‘Making Art Outdoors’ project. Under the expert guidance of tutor Peter Kyte, the group have been taking photos of trees and other plants in Kew Gardens, Chumleigh Gardens and Burgess Park, and in some cases manipulating the images to make them abstract.

Our ‘Tree Abstracts’ photography course started today with a trip to beautiful Kew Gardens to focus on images of bark. The group will work further on the images to make them abstract. Next Tuesday 25th August, 1-3pm we’ll be at Chumleigh Gardens, if any budding photographers want to join us.

Just thinking of how important trees have been to me during lockdown - seen through windows or during daily exercise...
