Dan Mano - Old passport mask

Please note the extraordinary dark-encrusted-unctuous patina of this old maskette that testifies both its great age and its very long tribal use

The almost sweating oiliness of the wood makes me think that this object was probably used not only as a personal charm, but perhaps also for divination rites - Secret rites during which the objects were sprinkled with oils and magic substances, and then interrogated for propitiatory & medical purposes - This last one is however a personal supposition of mine, of which I am absolutely convinced, but which however does not find certain and objective evidences

Dan or Dan Mano - Passport mask most probably also with Bassa influences

A very very old example, certainly one of the early productions of the passport masks of Ivory Coast and Liberia
- please note its “primitive” style, which is evidence of the great age of this object
- please also note its great patina and many signs of use, characteristics that are the undoubted proof of the very long tribal use of the maskette

I find very curious the similarity of this maskette to some Inuit ivory productions - Obviously this is an African object that comes from Ivory Coast or Liberia, no doubt about this statement - But it has many many similarities, also with regard to the color of its patina, with the small ivory masks of the Inuit of the artic and subarctic regions of North America and Asia

Wood - 8,6 cm

A very modern shape for a very old Kifwebe diminutive maskette

It is an interesting & unusual example because of its side back that is “full” and not excavated : as you can see its back profile is convex and not concave as for most of the maskettes of this ethnic group

Sabbatikal’s (@sabbatikalsapce) exhibition, On Matter, brings together Charles Arnoldi (@charlesarnoldistudio) and Woods Davy (@woods.davy) in a dialogue around material, gesture, and the quiet tension between structure and chance.

In this walkthrough, I (@sachahcohen) share a closer look at the works on view and the ideas shaping the exhibition—how each artist approaches form, weight, and the act of making.

On view at The KINN (@thekinn.co) in Venice through June 28.

Thank you to everyone involved and particularly Joshua (@joshuabgeyer) for support with the making of this video.

Grateful for such a celebratory and memorable opening night for On Matter, a Sabbatikal exhibition curated by yours truly.

My deepest thanks to Charles Arnoldi and Woods Davy for their trust and collaboration, and to The KINN and Venice Fine Arts for co-hosting this presentation. Bringing this exhibition to life required the care and commitment of many friends, colleagues, collectors, and staff. Thank you for being part of it.

On Matter remains on view at The KINN in Venice through June 28, 2026.

I hope you’ll experience it in person.
