excerpt from tinikling by @nay_mapalo_ with asalato part arr. @davincai for @woodwork.atx

the audio is what we were originally given to work with, and the arrangement we did can be found on our youtube

the asalato part is the original part, but i didn't actually end up playing this in shows haha

this one was a little tricky to figure out, stickings aren't totally accurate to what im actually playing

About four and a half years ago, we (@tetractysnm ) gathered all the Austin indie-classical musicians and groups we could think of together to ask if they might be interested in coming together for a group show. We called it Here Be Monsters.

The real motivation was to catch a glimpse - of our music, culture, choices, point of view - and to have that glimpse supercharge our music. The idea is that a mirror like that might unlock, unleash, un-whatever else all the potential. Things do change when groups of musicians begin to sense a higher order of meaning in their work. You might say we wanted to see ourselves so we can more fully be ourselves. And in true Austin fashion, we also wanted to have fun, joy, and to make the most of the moments we have together.

Our first show was a one-day show at Butterfly Bar, and even with the inevitable hiccups of putting on a big, complex show for the first time, it was a genuinely sublime day. It basically worked.

In the two years since then we grew to a two-day show at Radio/EAST, with more groups, more world premiere commissions, more exploration and more MUSIC.

This weekend we’ll be gathering again for the fourth Here Be Monsters Festival. 27 groups (so many that IG won’t let me tag them all), each playing 20 minute sets. 2 days of music, 10 world premiere pieces, over 160 musicians - all taking place at the amazing, award-winning Radio/EAST.

My hope is that this event isn’t just about musicians performing for you - it’s about a different kind of space for all of us. The music you’ll hear at Here Be Monsters is expansive, adventurous, free; and it is our intention and our hope that being at the shows will remind you that you are all those things as well.

If you’re in Austin, please come (ticket link in comments below).
