I’ve loved @hofeshco work for as long as I can remember. Having @woojin.kwon_ in front of my lense after seeing him perform #inthebrain @southbankcentre this year was rather dreamy.

IN THE BRAIN by Hofesh Shechter Company (@hofeshco) at @southbankcentre

This is what a rave should feel like! IN THE BRAIN captured so much of what I love about techno and rave culture, and in its most intense moments it took me straight back to the dance floor at Berghain: that feeling of people completely immersed in the music, surrendering themselves to it and there simply to dance.

Shechter’s choreography was incredible and unmistakably his, driven by the pelvis and upper body, with the arms, hands, legs and feet becoming intricate extensions of that movement. The dancers were superb - with a striking contrast between the fluidity of the group formations and the exhilarating individual solos. There was a sense of freedom to it all, even as the precision and detail underneath remained extraordinary.

The intensity came in waves. Stretches of relentless dancing gave way to moments of breathing and recovery, giving the dancers space before the energy began building again. That cycle of intensity and release felt instinctively right for techno: you could feel the dancers catching their breath before surrendering to another intense burst of movement.

The music was phenomenal, and the lighting was inseparable from the choreography - shaping the texture and intensity of the movement as the dancers moved across the stage. Together they created an atmosphere that felt immersive rather than theatrical. For much of the performance I was dancing in my seat.

IN THE BRAIN captured that collective experience of giving yourself over to the music and simply dancing in a ritualistic way. Exhilarating, intoxicating and an absolute joy to watch!

A huge thank you to our Guest Choreographer, Becky Namgauds @beckynamgauds for an unforgettable week of R&D with our Shechter II as part of the dancers’ CPD programme @agoradansemontpellier ❤️

Across the week, the studio was filled with curiosity, play, improvisation and fearless exploration. Becky created a space where ideas could be tested, instincts trusted, and creativity could flourish, leading to so many exciting discoveries along the way.

It was an inspiring week of learning, laughter and collaboration, and a truly invaluable experience for everyone involved.

Thank you, Becky, for your generosity, energy and imagination. We can’t wait to see where these explorations lead you✨

Hofesh Shechter Company: In the Brain - in review!

"Whilst Hofesh Shechter has a signature style, in both choreography and composition, and he stubbornly sticks to it, albeit with some variation from show to show, he always succeeds in applying it to new ideas and themes, as he unearths the grit beneath the glamour of theatre or the ritualism beneath the liberation of raves. This a testament to his artistic brilliance: he has crafted a unique style that can speak to various, perhaps countless, issues and ideas, if not all of them."
