Performance: Woojae Kim, Adrian Avendaño and Khan Lee. Thursday October 15, 8pm. Details via link in bio

The sound generated by Kim's installation 120Hz is initiated by a live 60Hz current that is drawn from an adapter plugged into the gallery wall. The hum of this draw is picked up, split, then fed out to four speakers that are attached to four discrete instruments that Kim fashioned. The vibration of the hum's amplification resonates the forms, which is picked up by microphones. This signal feeds back into the amp and is mixed with a pre-recorded composition that was performed on the same percussive bodies.

For the performance, @woooooooojae , @guachiii and @khankills will deconstruct the installation and improvise with the circuit of live and recorded sound. It will build upon their recent performances for The Structure of Smoke exhibition at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery and UBC Okanagan Gallery; and during Kim's I hear a silent dissonance exhibition at Afternoon Projects. Their approach will be influenced by their mutual study in Nong-ak traditional Korean percussion with Peter Park.

The percussive assemblages that @woooooooojae built for the installation borrow elements from Korean instruments, including a small gong “Kwaenggwari”and a larger gong titled "Jing" made by Moon-ik Kim, Gyeong-gi Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 10. in Seoul. Kim also fashioned a "Buk", double headed barrel drum.

Details of @woooooooojae Woojae Kim's exhibition "120Hz...". Kim 3D printed the horn for his speakers, drawn from the open source ‘Solana’ design by @jw_sound . He hand bent each copper loop of the fringe, and hand singed each wooden bead, inspired by the figures in Korean music notation. The subwoofer features auspicious hand sawn brass ornaments called Jang-seok. The shear black curtain on the window is pierced by 29 pins made by hand out of solder wire. The eyes both peer into the gallery and out to the street. Photos @nkphoto_____

@woooooooojae Woojae Kim's installation "120 Hz (for you who have taught me to think about the world I am passing on)" is open until October 17, 2026. A 60Hz electrical feed runs through the installation. It vibrates percussive sculptures, which are mic'd. The feedback signal is then mixed with a recorded composition. Kim fabricated most of the instruments, hardware, speakers and subwoofer. Photos by @nkphoto_____

Pale Fire is excited to present a new work by Woojae Kim @woooooooojae. September 17 to October 17, 2026. Opening Reception on Saturday September 19, 5-10pm.

In "120Hz (for you who have taught me to think about the world I am passing on)" (2026), Kim focuses on listening to electricity, which is one of the most ubiquitous yet under-acknowledged sounds in our environment. The audible vibration produced by a 60Hz electrical cycle is the hum of productivity and consumption. It encourages us to work through darkness, spoils us with goods from all over the world, and overwhelms us with access to information. It is a sound that our behaviour produces, and that has a detrimental effect on us and all living beings.

Kim experiments with the conditions of this behavioural noose by establishing a closed auditory loop between an amplified 120Hz drone and handmade percussive instruments. In the processing circuit, variable opportunities arise for gestures made within the gallery to modify the signal. 120Hz is a spatial meditation on the impact of our habits and the reverberations they generate. I hear a silent dissonance
2026
Woojae Kim @woooooooojae

until February 28th

at Afternoon Projects

I got my first snare drum for Christmas at the age of ten, and with the help from my drum instructor T. Duncan Scott, I built my first full kit for $275 (which was a lot of money for a lawn mower).

I eventually upgraded to a Gretsch Renown maple kit with Zildjian “A” cymbals, and I spent many years attempting to mimic the precise and complex rhythms of such musical geniuses as Danny Carey, Carter Beauford, Gavin Harrison, Neil Peart, Glenn Kotche, and many others. And while I sold that kit during the pandemic, I still have the permanent calluses and hearing loss to show for it.

So imagine my delight when I walked into the latest exhibition at Afternoon Projects, an installation of hand made and modified percussion instruments by Woojae Kim.

In conjunction with this exhibition, a live performance by Woojae and Adrian Avendano took place at @belkinartgallery on Feb 7th.

Please join us this Saturday (Feb 7th) at 2 pm for a performance of Woojae Kim’s work I hear a silent dissonance, with percussionist Adrian Avendaño in the Belkin Art Gallery.

For this performance at the Belkin, Kim and Avendaño will use Kim’s handmade percussion instruments and objects, including drums, modified cymbals and gongs that borrow from traditional Korean music, to create an improvisational piece that looks to the Belkin’s current exhibition, The Structure of Smoke. Kim’s I hear a silent dissonance began as a response to the 2023 wildfire season, the most destructive fire season in British Columbia’s history, and includes material collected from some of these fire-affected forests.

Kim’s performance is part of the exhibition The Structure of Smoke. Through the lens of contemporary artists’ engagement with the metaphorical and literal processes of fire and the spaces it creates and displaces, The Structure of Smoke includes works that problematize the poetic, structural and political aspects of fire. These works complicate the inherent contradictions of wildness and domestication, technological progress and social control, colonial conditions, rebirth and death. Holding a smoked mirror to contemporary society, the works in this exhibition offer ways to undo the familiar in how we approach our uncertain future.
