Another author dream came true when I was sent these magical photos last night!

After receiving Genie Snail in a @wordsgrowminds kindergarten book pack, 4yo Miss A and her mum worked hard together to make this costume (Miss A helped with the papier-mâché, painting and cutting stars). Isn’t it so splendid? I told them it’s the best snail an author could wish for.

Have a wonderful last day of book week! ✨

Book week is in full swing in our house. I wasn’t expecting this little goodie bag for my kiddo from @wordsgrowminds @raisingliteracyaus but I am so excited to have some new books to explore as a family. What a great idea. I was also very spoilt today by @pinkshortspress with @fridalasvegas new book but also after talking about South Australian history Em very kindly gave me these two other books to dive into which I can’t wait!!! 📚 #bookweek #wordsgrowminds #reading #australianbooks #kindlygifted

There’s a new kid’s library in town! Literally, in town! In the State Library of South Australia.

It’s a dedicated children’s library, for kids aged 0 to 11. It’s a space to read, talk, sing and play.

Let’s check it out, with thoughts from a Paediatric OT and a 3yo…

Sensory accessibility:
🌈 It’s fun, joyful and colourful. A sensory seeker’s dream
📗There are separate reading nooks with varied seating, which creates more space between people
📺 There are 2 big screens with moving images, and one has music
🎶 There is a section including musical instruments that can be played by kids
✨If your child has visual or auditory sensitivities, it could be a lot
✏️ However, it’s easy to access the foyer and next door exhibition space
😌 The exhibition space has more muted colours, and a calming feel, and a quiet corner where kids can sit and read or make. This felt like a peaceful retreat to me.

Location:
🛞The Little Library is on the ground floor, and accessible for wheelchair and pram users
🚋 Bus, and tram are available close by. A short walk from the train station
🚙 Paid car parking in surrounding streets or multi-storey carparks.

The reading nooks were bright and colourful, with a great range of new books and old favourites.

“I like the reading!” - My 3yo

This area was FUN! It included opportunities for loose parts creative play. People use small tiles to make patterns and faces. Then, they’re placed under a scanner and you can see your creation on screen!

This activity is great for development of visual perception and spatial awareness, as well as planning and thinking skills.

“I like building” - My 3yo

This was a wonderful, calming space to me. Currently there’s an exhibition that includes interactive elements, like touch screen sound, and a cool tunnel for kids to walk through.

“I liked to boing in the tunnel” - My 3yo

My favourite part. This amazing mural of whimsical characters can be stared at for hours, finding iconic objects and places from Adelaide and South Australia.

“Great!” - My 3yo

The sing space included catchy karaoke songs teaching listeners the Kaurna language.

It also includes moveable large cushions. This loose parts play ca

We're excited to support their important work and help raise funds to support families, carers and early childhood educators.

We were delighted to come across this lovely picture book in our library. We didn’t think twice about borrowing it for our children and we had fun reading it together at home.

In this story, our children get to follow a loving family on a stroll from their home to the park and home again.

Just like the children in the story, our children do spend a lot of time strolling with us and naming what we see along the way when we’re outdoors, so it was instantly relatable for them.

This engaging book is written in a captivating rhyming text with great clarity and the illustrations are so tender and joyful.

Our children’s favourite lines are “Traffic lights, rubbish truck. At the park, mother duck” as they turn to open up the surprise ‘gatefold’ pages in the middle of the book which reveal their favourite image of the family at the park.

Meanwhile, we love the lines “Sandy fun, shady trees. Swishy grass, fallen leaves” which are captured beautifully by a heartwarming image of the parents sitting together as they watch their children play in the park.

A beautiful book that reminds us to be present with our children and appreciate the sweet little moments we get to share with them as they experience our world with wonderment.

Professor Susan Golombok’s research at the Cambridge Centre for Family Research is among the most cited in family science. The finding is consistent: family structure does not determine child outcomes.

Across decades of follow-up studies, children raised by solo mothers by choice show equivalent outcomes in cognitive development, emotional regulation, and peer relationships.

What predicts a child’s wellbeing is the quality of their relationships — not the number of parents in the household.

— Golombok, S. (2020).

Come with us to the Words Grow Minds literacy program at Bunnings Adelaide Airport, hosted by West Torrens Library Services 📚✨
We danced, we sang, we read stories, and of course we dressed up inspired the books Buzz and The Very Hungry Caterpillar 🐛🦋
What a beautiful reminder that the first five years of life are some of the most important years for learning, language development, connection, and curiosity. Through stories, songs, movement, and play, children are building the foundations for a lifelong love of learning.
If you’re local, don’t forget that West Torrens Library @westtorrenslibraryservice Services runs similar programs through their libraries too — such an incredible free resource for families. ❤️
Days like these remind us that learning doesn’t have to look like worksheets or desks. Sometimes it looks like dressing up, singing loudly, and getting completely lost in a good book.
