Come for the art @notesfromdaughters stay for the conversation! Sign up at the link in the bio and hear from @douglasrushkoff author and documentarian who studies human autonomy in a digital age. He has written 25 books on media, technology, and culture, created the concepts of “viral media,” “screenagers,” and “social currency,” and his PBS Frontline documentaries — Generation Like, The Persuaders, and Merchants of Cool— remain essential viewing on media, marketing, and youth culture. He is also developing original graphic novels. Rushkoff is Team Human Ambassador at ANDUS Labs, a permanent member of the Club of Rome, a senior research fellow at the Institute for the Future, and a fellow at the Institute for General Semantics. He is Professor of Media Theory and Digital Economics at CUNY/Queens College and a columnist for Medium.

I am deeply honored to have him participate in the panel discussion on Fathers and Daughters - The father-daughter relationship does not exist outside our culture. Fathers are also men formed by inherited ideas about their role, authority, protection, sexuality, and womanhood, and they inevitably transmit and challenge those ideas in raising their daughters. Rushkoff’s work examines culture and its power, how media, technology, and social systems shape identity, frame power, and influence how we understand ourselves and one another. That perspective feels essential to this conversation.

“Pretty in Pink”: Four years ago (when I still had my bookstore), I undertook a photographic project on transgender embodiment and performativity. It had been many years since I had worn a dress or makeup. My first outing was next door at Hopper House to view an exhibition of the paintings of Lillian’s Tomasko. Two of the photographs I took of myself in my bookstore reference paintings by Hopper. I gave a reading of essays I had written on the subject for @wordshednyc and an artist talk on my birthday.

Daughters of Patriarchy: A Wormhole Study
12” x 12”
acrylic, ink and graphite on wood panel
2026

As a biological female form born into the patriarchal system that has prevailed on Earth for approximately five or six thousand years.
I am tired of this violent domination where humanity lost its caring for women and children, ancient social contract that has enslaved women for thousands of years. I now have comments, responses, and questions about what I have experienced and witnessed—as well as an urge to reimagine a real ground of hope for a matriarchal future.

This is one of the two paintings will be part of a group exhibition @notesfromdaughters curated by @leahelimeliah.

⏰September 23- October 22, 2026
Opening Wednesday, September 23

Honored to have had @lunarchandelier17 Kimberly Lyons, @donyorty Don Yorty, and @jordaneverse Jordan Franklin gift us their powerful, incisive, honest, and deeply compelling poems. I loved the range of voices and sensibilities moving through the room- the poet, the lover, the mother, the zombie, the witness, the observer, each presence opening another emotional and imaginative register. The work itself always pulls me inward, toward deeper reflection, but what lingers most is my curiosity about the poets themselves: the lives, contradictions, humor, wounds, and ways of seeing that shape the language on the page. Thank you to @vonbarnyc for hosting @wordshednyc once again! 🙏🌸🌸
