As AI makes it easier to create more, the marketer’s advantage shifts to judgment: learning to get past the obvious, make better choices, and turn an abundance of possibilities into impact. #SIC2026

For Washington, D.C.'s Metro system, Order (@order.design.nyc) and W&CO (@workandco), in collaboration with planning firm Entro (@entrocom), set out to modernize wayfinding without losing the identity riders already know. The result, the WMATA Digital Wayfinding Manual, is a 2025 SEGD Merit Award winner in Strategy/Research/Planning.

The system builds on the bold, straightforward approach Massimo Vignelli created for WMATA in the 1970s and extends it into real-time digital signage. Color-coded modules separate standard service, service changes, and emergencies, so you can tell at a glance what's happening. Cardinal directions give riders new points of reference, added language support opens the system to more people, and the same design carries onto trains, buses, and bus stations.

It started with time spent in the stations. The team audited the 15 busiest locations, watched how riders moved through them, and heard directly from customers in interviews and focus groups. Nearly 4 in 10 said they had taken the wrong exit in the past year, which made the priorities clear: better hierarchy, more context, and information that updates as fast as the system does. A digital guidelines document now lets WMATA adapt and expand the design on its own, and rollout began in 2024 at L'Enfant Plaza and Chinatown.

Jurors praised how clearly the project focuses on what commuters need and leaves out everything else. It gives riders confidence at every stage of their trip and gives WMATA a system built to grow with the network.

“Enjoy chatting with everyone.”

Here is some fun work I’m proud of. @workandco partnered with @android to reimagine the Google Messages hub on Android.com — I led the motion for every animation on the page. The goal, to make Messages feel like a product people want to use, not just an app. Now live at Android.com/google-messages

I’m so excited for this to be done but I’m also so glad I got through it! I have learned a lot about myself and the way I design. I can’t wait to finally have a bit more time for designs and really plan and think through each aspect.
