Yesterday, my husband Carl did a financial presentation via Zoom to share his knowledge on saving, budgeting, establishing credit, paying off debt and investing. I’ve seen him do this presentation in person few times but every time he does it I learn something new about finances and also something new about him.

On this slide in particular, he always speaks to the moment his mindset shifted from a consumer mindset to a legacy mindset. He specifically speaks about how he used to buy every pair of Jordans that ever existed, and then one day after standing in line for hours and being so upset about not being able to get a pair, he decided to never let a pair of shoes or any item he purchased (or wanted to purchase) to have that much control over life.

The moment in which he made that decision was a year before I met him (yea, he remembers the exact day lol) and as his now wife, I’m so grateful for that decision and that shift that God placed on his spirit to make. The Carl I know hasn’t purchased a pair of Jordans in almost 9 years. But it’s not the Jordans that I care about. What I’m most grateful for is the fact that he made a choice for his future wife that he didn’t even know, and his future kids and grandkids and great-grandkids lol. I’m grateful for his vision for his family and I’m inspired by his desire to not keep his financial knowledge and wisdom to himself. He believes it’s his purpose to share his story of debt freedom and pursuit of financial independence with everyone, especially Black people, so we can all be free. He’s extremely passionate about it and makes it a point to say he’s just a regular person and everyone can do it too. I’m so proud of my husband and all that he’s doing and I’m super grateful to be on his team.

Together, we’ve made the decision to track our net worth and progress towards financial freedom with the intention to retire early. We’ve created an IG account to also share what we learn on this journey. If you want to learn more or attend one of Carl’s future seminars, follow us at @merrittmatrimoney!

It’s the “Legacy Mindset” for me! 😂
