Birdsong is one of the most melodious and persistent harbringers of Spring—the season of renewal and rebirth. A long winter, followed by a vibrant Spring indicates that all the forces that have slumbered are now in order for new life to take shape, and new beginnings to commence.

The iconography of the bird symbolises the renewal of life, the readiness of the Earth and the trees to bear fruit, and the act of nesting and nurture.

When I thought of viśvaṃbharā-the all sustaining, I wanted to consciously bring together all the forces of creation—those that were potent and present in the world around me and those that I carried within me in my mind and my body.

I see the work as a confluence of my own lived experience as a woman, my creative energy as an artiste, and the earth’s regenerative spirit.

Everything slows before something begins. Before birth, there is waiting, there is the gathering of forces, and slowly and surely, there is the gentle pulse of life beginning to form.

It is a moment of deep, contemplative transition, a shift from before to the after—to a profound new reality where we move from experiencing and witnessing life to actively shaping it. It is a move from the one to the many, and from the individual to the social.

How do we imagine the world as a womb?

The Rig Veda describes the universe as originating from a "golden womb" or "golden egg" (Hiranyagarbha), which floated in the darkness of the primordial ocean.

In origin myths, the world is not born fully formed but carried. It is held in darkness, in water, in the deep interior where time moves slowly.

Through my work, I have imagined the woman and the womb as containing the regenerative energy of the universe. She is Mother, and she is also Mother Earth. Her body carries the marks of those that she nurtures and her imprint remains on everything she has created.

With every turn around the sun, she is wise but youthful, weathered but refreshed, and hardened but supple.

The circle of life, the circle of seasons, and all natural rhythms that ebb and flow, are the sum of human existence. The creative cycle too, is a homage to this life-giving force.

A call to the divine feminine marks the initiation of the sacred cycle of birth and regeneration. This is the invocation of life and the spirit of viśvaṃbharā, who blesses the living world with newness and abundance.

Rivers flow, trees grow, and within us, life mirrors nature’s rhythm. The iconography of fish, plentiful and born of water, is a motif to show the synergy between the living universe and its interconnectedness to human life.

In every tiny detail, a whole world comes to life. It is in the minutiae of creation that life is repeatedly created and multiplied. All the little parts in which life is breathed come together to shape the whole, and forces of nature converge to create the living, breathing universe.
