As a lifelong passionate reader, a mid-life author, and trained historian, there is something divinely sublime about being taught the intricacies of binding a book. It is a dream of mine to do this and confirms a longstanding suspicion that book binding is the last part of a magical incantation that creates a book.

Yes, now physical publishing is all very much about cost and profit and loss schedules all the way through but this class from @bookbindersmuseum at @worldfantasycon26 created a portal to the past and the power of the printed word. Gutenberg’s printing press transformed our access to knowledge. It was one of the most revolutionary acts of its time. But the access to knowledge that printing and books created has been continually contested through: Books bans. Erasure or corruption of media through physical or digital means. And denial of access to information. These are all current battles we face. The act of making a book, printing a zine, photocopying a flyer, slapping a sticker are all acts of inspired action dating back to 1440. #gutenberg #librariesareforeveryone #booksaremagic

This weekend I’ll have pieces in the @worldfantasycon26 art show! The World Fantasy Convention is a roaming show held in a different city across the world every year, and this year it’s being held in Oakland at the @oaklandconventioncenter. Plus, my friend @spmlaw is the art guest of honor! Stephanie, as if you didn’t already know, is a renowned fantasy and nature watercolor artist residing right here in the Bay Area.

I am very honored to have been selected to be in the art show. It’s given me a chance to do new high concept fine illustration, something I haven’t had time to do in a while. The first picture is a close-up preview of one of my new pieces, entitled “Where Is My Mind”.

If you’re planning on attending, be sure to check out the art show and stop by the dealer room where my friend @tomesandcoffee will be exhibiting with the @thehorrorwritersassociation.
