Artist Statement: This patchwork self-portrait is based on a photo of me taken sixteen years ago. I treat fabric as paint and build the portrait through patchwork. Looking back on my youth, I document more than a decade of personal growth and achieve self-reflection amid the mutual scrutiny: “I gaze at society, and society gazes back at me.” I have loved fabrics since childhood and am passionate about creating art with textiles. The unique texture of fabric endows the work with distinctive charm. This is also why I am so dedicated to patchwork art.

Four Artists: Myroslava Boikiv @myroslavaboikivart of Toronto, Bear Epp @bear_epp of Cherry Vallery, Ontario, Judy Bales @judybales_studio_fashion of Fairfield, Iowa, and Lorraine Roy @lroy.art of Dundas, Ontario all present their works in World of Threads Festival 2026-27. Curated by Gareth Bate @garethbate and Dawne Rudman. #worldofthreadsfestival #worldofthreads #natureart #textileart #fibreart

Myroslava Boikiv: In Canadian Prairies, I weave natural fibres and strips of reclaimed clothing to reflect my experience of discovering Canada’s vast landscape after moving to Canada from Ukraine. The endless horizon, changing light, and quiet rhythm of the prairies stayed with me long after I left.

Bear Epp: A Silent Cry is inspired by the plants and animals I see daily in Prince Edward County — a place I call home. Bramble and sumac line the roads, offering hiding places in the dense brush. From my window, I see the barn and watch for owls perched in the nearby trees; at night, I listen to coyote packs calling, filling the darkness with their voices.

Judy Bales: Story/Forest Floor: Hovering between tapestry and painting, the fabric strips became my brush strokes of colour and texture. The surface brought forth memories of walks in woods and fields, where the surface colours and textures change daily while the earth remains stable and constant.

Lorraine Roy: Fabric is an ideal material for capturing the attributes of natural forms, and my techniques mirror processes that bring order to diverse and humble materials. The biology, mythology and symbolism of trees, classic emblems of the communion of earth and spirit, are my main inspiration.

Stan Olthuis @stanolthuis of Peterborough, Ontario presents his work in our major exhibition “Water Stories” in World of Threads Festival 2026-27. Curated by Gareth Bate @garethbate and Dawne Rudman. #worldofthreadsfestival #worldofthreads #kayak #installation

Artist Statement: Resonance
The kayak is a universal symbol for hunting, resilience and respect for water. In this piece I used it to symbolize personal exploration and discovery. I equipped the boat with my version of an ancient navigational system consisting of stones, glass, copper and deer antlers to act as antennae. In an attempt to indicate that this discovery could go anywhere, I prepared a natural canvas background with imagery that appears both aquatic and celestial. By mounting the resulting components on the wall it shifts our perception indicating that our journey does not have to follow the conventional route.

Water Stories

Water Stories is our major festival exhibition. It explores humanity’s many relationships to water. Different perspectives include ecological, political, spiritual, cultural, economic and recreational. Artists in this show depict lakes, rivers, oceans, beaches, coasts, wetlands, waterfalls, rainfall and even underground rivers. Some depict vast ecosystems brimming with life such as kelp forests and coral reefs. There are elegies to habitat loss and calls for the return of lost salmon. Some artists see their art as a form of environmental activism. They’re determined to fight back. Many artists are concerned with sustainability in their practice and incorporate natural, repurposed or vintage materials. Several in this show explore nature’s regeneration or r

The Lookout 1-4
In the forest, texture and colour surround you. Hard surfaces are made soft with moss and leaves. Muted colours are punctuated by the drama of acid green, neon yellow. Everywhere there are layers of growth, decomposition and regeneration. I loved building these pieces. The contrasting fabric textures, the earthy colour palette, intricate piecing, curved shapes, hand quilting, gold lamé, Egyptian cotton thread, raw edge appliqué, and dense machine quilting all combine to recreate the dense and living velvet of the forest floor.
The Lookout quadriptych is inspired by walks in the woods at our cottage on Lac des Chats in Quebec.

I’m happy to share I’ve been selected to exhibit a solo show of weavings at the World of Threads Festival! If you’re in the Oakville area I invite you to spend time at the festival, the staggering amount of talent throughout the building is truly astounding!

This series is rooted in my connection to gardening and the healing role it’s played in my life.  Embedded in the weavings are images of my foraging and gardening sites, layered with traditional weaving drafts. Created with plant-dyed wool from my research, I share my ongoing study and a deeper emotional journey.
