Have you heard the big news for indoor para rowing?

World Rowing has introduced new Indoor Adaptive Rowing (IAR) categories for 2026, and it marks an important evolution in how para and adaptive athletes are classified in our sport.

The new IAR1–IAR7 system brings better alignment across Para Rowing, Virtus, IBSA and Invictus Games, who have worked with World Rowing to revamp the classification system, to create clearer, fairer competition.

This is significant progress!

It’s a clear sign that adaptive rowing is evolving by listening to athletes and responding to real-world experience.

Kat Ross, Australian Paralympic PR2 rower, four-times World Champion and Board Member of Para Rowing Foundation explains:

“The introduction of the new Indoor Adaptive Rowing categories represents an important evolution in the sport’s classification framework. For too long, some athletes have sat between classifications that did not fully reflect how they row or the impairments they live with. Greater alignment across Para Rowing, Invictus, Virtus and IBSA classifications brings much needed clarity and continuity, particularly for athletes navigating multiple pathways. This is progress, and it is also a signal that adaptive rowing continues to evolve by listening to athletes and responding to real world experience.”

PRF will continue to support athletes and clubs as these changes roll out across the indoor rowing world.

World record yesterday

Back to work today!

Well technically, I was back in the office directly after setting it, becuase that was during my lunch break...

But today, back to the pool and back to training.

Still not able to dive off my bad foot... So single legged work...

Learning how to push yourself doesnt come down to innate toughness, it comes down to have a plan.

We all know the middle section of any race is where all the doubt creeps in, and all the pain screams at you to stop.

All rowers deal with this, so how do elite rowers deal with this part of the race to go on and pull scores like 6:21 and 5:35.

And how can you borrow those methods so that you can push through the pain, hit a PB, and be proud to row to the best version of you.

These methods will work for upcoming events like the World Rowing Virtual Indoor Champs.

In the first half of a race, your body is fresh, but so is your mind - and your mind likes to overthink. To combat this, have a technical point you can focus on that keeps you rowing efficient - think “row loose” “fast hands” “quick at the front”. This will keep your mind focused on conserving energy for where it really counts….

…In the second half - here, have a technical point that helps you push. This needs to relate to the drive. Think “Legs” “hang” “hips”. Use these cues in response to the pain and doubt that inevitably comes in.

Lastly, sit down, close your eyes, and visualise yourself using these cues.

Imagine the start, then you over thinking, then you think about efficiency, then you getting back onto pace.

Imagine the second half, then the pain and doubt kicking in, then you thinking about how to push, then you getting back onto pace.

Stop hopping you will be tougher this time, start with an actual plan.

And if you want more tips on how to push yourself, follow my account for more.

And if you want an event to practice this in, get yourself to the World Rowing Virtual Indoor Champs.

Come with me as I train for the World Rowing Virtual Indoor Championship 1k, moving through my day with the time awareness of a #3seat .

I had a request in my last #DITL to do one with food, and so here is everything I consumed. I ran the numbers at the end of the day and so nothing is weighed, but this was ballpark 4k calories, 507g C - 189g P - 145g F.

As one of the top performers in the World Rowing Summer Series last year, I got to meet today with the rowing legend @kiwipair_eric — and realized some ways that I could improve my post-training nutrition. I usually get sucked into mom duties and then eat later, but getting in something right afterwards can help the recovery process.

Completely unrelated to rowing, if you're an American (🇺🇸) who makes under $69k, VITA is a FREE resource for tax filing. Info available at IRS.gov.
