Featuring artist Cristina BanBan @cristina_banban , with photographs by Albert Font @al.bertfg . Exhibit currently on view @skarstedtgallery NYC
.
Cristina BanBan: Jaque Mate,
An exhibition of new paintings currently on view at Skarstedt Chelsea.
Taking its title from the Spanish term for checkmate, the exhibition expands BanBan’s exploration of the female form through a consideration of the body as a permeable entity constantly reshaped by its proximity and relationship to others. In chess, every interaction between pieces alters the response and position of the whole. Likewise, with these new paintings every gesture, lean, and point of contact effects change on the entirety of the composition.

Today we feature the work of #fashiondesigner Ella Sophia Mannov @ellsoman. A recent grad of @royaldanishacademy_mafashion . @cphfw . I’m Danish-American, born in Austria.

Fashion became my outlet for self-expression, as a shy girl. Growing up, my friends and I lacked access to stylish clothes, so I experimented with making outfits using my older brother’s hand-me-downs and household items. In 8th grade, I interned with Danish designer Stine Goya, who captivated me with the balance between structure, planning, and rigidity and creativity, imagination, and craft in fashion design.

I’m fascinated by fashion and eager to pursue ready-to-wear design. I want to understand how women wear and use clothing in their daily lives and create fashion that appeals to them without resorting to minimalism, timelessness, or quiet luxury. I also plan to explore styling as a means of fashion participation without spending money, possibly through an Instagram account, zine, or YouTube vlog that inspires people to look stylish using what they have.

After our challenging effort organizing the graduation show, I’ll regroup and rest before finding a job in ready-to-wear. I’m excited about brands like Marni, Marc Jacobs, Kiko Kostadinov, and Anne Sofie Madsen, which offer realistic women’s wear without compromising on creativity and quality.

I apprenticed as a tailor at Danish National Broadcasting and studied at Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands. I earned my BA and MA at The Royal Danish Academy. During my studies, I interned at Duran Lantink in Amsterdam and A. Roege Hove in Copenhagen. @journy_magazine #fashion #art #culture
