From September 5th, over 𝟭𝟬𝟬+ 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 will be happening across 𝟭𝟯 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 for the EU Action Week organised by @architects4future 🌍 You can check the whole programme via https://actionweek.eu

For those in the Netherlands, this is 𝗔𝗡 𝗜𝗡𝗩𝗜𝗧𝗘 𝗧𝗢 𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗘𝗨 𝗔𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗪𝗘𝗘𝗞:

As an adaption to the EU Action Week's "Building the Future we Need" slogan, we called our action “𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸: 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗲 𝗔𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲!” 🏬💚👷 to bring attention to the staggering fact that, on average in the Netherlands, a building is demolished every 40 minutes.

The Dutch media has recently shown us the power of #construction #lobbies in the Netherlands, who put profit over people, themselves, and our climate. 𝗪𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 for a liveable future for all!

ACAN NL is doing two actions/performances in public space:
📍𝗥𝗢𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗗𝗔𝗠 | 𝟱 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 | 𝟭𝟰:𝟬𝟬–𝟭𝟴:𝟬𝟬
at Rotterdam Centraal Stationsplein, with drinks and food after
📍𝗔𝗠𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗗𝗔𝗠 | 𝟭𝟮 𝗦𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 | 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟭𝟭:𝟬𝟬
at Dam, before joining the Klimaatmars together, with drinks and food after

This is your invite to come by, wear a helmet, take a hammer, have a go at ringing the demolition bell every 40 minutes, help amplify our voice, share the action, join the action.

𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁
We have a small budget available to support those who need an extra hand with buying NS travel tickets to reach the action. Please just reach out if we can help you.

See you in Rotterdam or Amsterdam?

In solidarity,

Architects Climate Action Network Nederland

Two weeks ago, we were invited by the Independent School for the City @school_for_the_city to contribute to the studio “My Own Public Housing”.
As part of the programme, we presented our housing research and the methodology behind our residential project START-Ivry.
The discussion focused on the floorplan being the most powerful tool we have to improve housing — not just to optimise surfaces, but to accommodate future needs and life changes.

Later, we welcomed the participants at the Cabanon, as part of the workshop field visits. Our 6.89 m² spatial experiment on what is possible when we optimise space — not by reducing surface, but by maximising the possibilities of one space.

Two different scales, but the same question:
What if the housing crisis is not just quantitative, but a design problem?

Thanks to the Independent School for the City @school_for_the_city for the invitation and the exchange. Always a pleasure to come back.

Join us this Friday, 21 November for a Symposium on Cultural Erasure. The Symposium, as part of our Fables of the Reconstruction series, will be examining the deliberate destruction of cultural heritage in war as a tool of domination and erasure, and will be organised in collaboration with the Spatial Justice for Palestine Network (SJ4PN-NL) and Ukraine - Netherlands Urban Network (UNUN).

We are delighted to share the full speakers panel:

Nama’a Qudah (moderator) – an interdisciplinary feminist researcher studying the spatial politics of displacement, with a focus on Palestinian refugee camps.

Wouter Vanstiphout - architectural historian and urbanism researcher, dean team member of the Independent School for the City and partner at Crimson Historians & Urbanists.

Arna Mačkić - architect and co-founder of Studio L A, whose work explores public architecture as a catalyst for equality, remembrance, and collective recovery.

Jamila Ghaddar - Lebanese feminist archivist and historian, and an Assistant Professor at the University of Amsterdam specializing in archival information and digital humanities.

Hiba Omari - development officer at RIWAQ with a background in media and journalism, focusing on heritage and cultural production in relation to social and political change in Palestine.

Valeria Prorizna - producer whose work includes the investigation of the 2022 destruction of the Mariupol Drama Theatre in collaboration with Forensic Architecture and the Center for Spatial Technologies.

Ankie Petersen - Cultural Heritage Protection officer in the Royal Dutch Armed Forces, leading cultural property safeguarding efforts, advising international bodies such as UNESCO and the Atrocities Crime Advisory Group.

Expect a compact afternoon event, bringing together voices from defence, human rights, conservation, history and architecture to discuss how we acknowledge cultural erasure, protect threatened heritage, and amplify the voices of those under attack.

The symposium will take place on Friday 21st November, 13:00 - 17:00. Ticket available for 20 euro here: https://www.schoolforthecity.nl/fables-of-the-reconstruction-cultural-genocide/

‘Shall we agree that all modern architecture should be demolished and all books about it burned and the fields of ashes sown with salt so that for generations to come no modernistic and unholy thoughts arise from this place called Brandevoort? Let’s honour our fallen heroes with chants in our favorite lingua franca. Homo Sapiens Non Urinat In Ventum. Amen.’ @traditionalarchitecturegroup

Zaterdag 14 juni 15-17h opent Gemene Gronden in De Hillevliet.

Triest bericht: architect Carel Weeber is vandaag overleden.
Markante man! RIP Carel, na een leven dat ten volle is geleefd

With the next edition of our ongoing series on the reconstruction of cities destroyed by nature or war “Fables of the Reconstruction” coming up in November, we would like to draw your attention to a piece we wrote based on the presentations and discussions of last year.

For the next edition, which will happen on Friday 15, 22, 29 of November, we will focus on the mechanisms behind the reconstruction of cities, contrasting the involvement of global conglomerates and multinationals with the need for locally rooted solutions. We will try to understand the place of consultants, bankers, politicians, engineers, planners and architects and how they influence the development of visions and plans. Through lectures and conversations the seminar will provoke an exchange of ideas across borders.

Tickets for the seminar are available for 150 euro, you can find them here https://www.schoolforthecity.nl/fables-of-the-reconstruction-2/. Special fees apply for special situations. For more info please send an email to info@schoolforthecity.nl. Read more about the previous edition here: https://www.schoolforthecity.nl/fables-of-the-reconstruction-2023/

100% Carel Weeber.

Sooo much fun, moderating a conversation with Architect / filmmaker Jord den Hollander and architectural@historian @woutervanstiphout at the Architecture Film Festival Rotterdam @affrfilmfestival ! Jord made a wonderful movie about Carel Weeber and Wouter wrote a fascinating book about him, ‘Autonoom’. And Carel (87) was there IRL! I knew Carel too, from writing about him for @nrcnl - and we were both awarded the Grote Maaskantprijs. So it was one big reunion!
