Did you know the original Rope Pull started in the pond at Institute Park, over 100 years ago?

First-years and sophomores (plus other classes and clubs) have battled it out on the ropes ever since, first in the pond at Institute Park, now on dry land at Alumni Field, all for the Goat's Head Trophy.

I originally approached photography from a technical mindset. Coming from an engineering background, I wanted to understand the camera, lighting, settings, and editing. My art history class showed me that learning how to create an image is only part of becoming a stronger photographer.

As part of my Digital Photography degree at @snhu, I studied how artists approached the human figure, symbolism, perspective, light, color, movement, emotion, and everyday life across different periods of art.

The Renaissance demonstrated how perspective, balance, and believable light can make viewers feel present inside a scene. Baroque art showed me that lighting should do more than make a subject visible. It should create emotion. Impressionism reinforced that technical perfection is not always the same as emotional impact.

Even periods that seem far removed from modern photography still offer lessons about posing, visual hierarchy, wardrobe, atmosphere, storytelling, and how viewers interpret an image.

The camera changed how images are created, but it did not replace what artists had already discovered about how we see.

That is one of the biggest things formal photography education gave me. It helped me look beyond how an image was made and think more deeply about why certain creative choices work.

Which period of art has influenced the way you photograph or create?

Save this for your next visit to a museum like the @ngadc, @americanart, or @smithsoniannpg, and share it with another photographer or artist.
