The cover I’m standing next to is the Special Hair Issue of Essence Magazine, now, part of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture’s collection. What many people don’t know is that this was the project that wasn’t considered a priority ( If you know, you know). It landed on my desk because hair was my beat. Over the years, so many people have visited the museum, taken photos with this cover, and sent them to me. But it was my daughter who finally said, “Mom, you need to go take your own picture.” I’m so glad she did. This issue was the result of an incredible team of editors, assistants, photographers, hair stylists, makeup artists, and creatives. I’ve actually waited years to post about it because it took me this long to visit the “Blacksonian” (dont judge) and I also wanted to find my original copy so I could properly acknowledge everyone, but y’all know I cant find it. (If you worked on this issue holla at your girl.) Every hairstyle you see on this cover including the Kelly Rowland cover shoot was selected and creatively directed by me. At the time, it was simply my assignment. I had no idea that years later, of all the thousands of issues Essence has published, this would be one of the issues preserved as part of our history. Look at God. But today, I wanted to share this lesson. This post is a reminder to myself as much as anyone else that sometimes the assignment everyone overlooks becomes the work that leaves the greatest impact. So if you’re sitting on an idea, building something no one understands, or pouring your heart into work that doesn’t seem important to anyone else...Do it anyway. Go hard! You never know which assignment will become your legacy.
