I’ve been loving wearing the @fishermanwatchco Beluga this week (scroll left for more pics and commentary). It’s such a fun watch, and priced at just €239, it’s difficult to argue with the value proposition. This includes a compact Peli-style hard case, one black leather strap and a matching yellow rubber strap. It’s fitted with a Seiko NH35 automatic movement and measures 41mm in diameter, although it must be said that it wears larger than that, as is common to all watches with this shaped case. It’s also beefed up by the 22mm lug width, which gives it a wide stance across the wrist. Thankfully however, the low profile case keeps things reasonable and a lot of the overall thickness comes courtesy of the impressive domed sapphire crystal which protects the dial (more pics to follow). Overall, given the low pricing, there’s very little to complain about here, but perhaps one thing of note is the low 50m water resistance, so improved WR is definitely on the wish list for a MK2 Beluga! However, I do wish the lugs angled down more to hug the wrist. A sneaky peak at the high-domed sapphire. More pics to follow. Geckota E-01 Mk1 .. I LOVE this watch 🙂 This very underrated, vintage style beauty from British watch brand, Geckota is later known as the Airstream (Mk2) and is still available on the Geckota website. I purchased mine, used, in 2018 and it's at the top of my all time favourites in my collection and will be a life-long keeper. Available with an automatic movement (Swiss ETA 2824-2 for the Mk1 (like this one) or, later, utilising the Miyota 9015) or quartz (Ronda). 100m water resistance. Beautiful sunburst grey (almost brown in some light) gradient dial and excellent BGW9 blue SuperLuminova lume. Available in numerous other dial colours and matched with a high quality Geckota/Watchgecko strap. 37mm case but with longer lugs this is a perfect GADA style/size as it wears bigger. My sweetspot tends to be 39mm and this feels more like that making it the perfect option for many wrists. Signed screwdown crown and unusual twelve-sided screwdown, exhibition caseback (automatic variants). Double-domed sapphire crystal. The dial is the part of the Horizon Spectrum DotCom that will probably get the most immediate attention, but it’s also the part I think most people will underestimate if they only see it in photos. At a glance, it looks like a bold, graphic, almost MoMA Design Store object with four primary-color quadrants and no conventional markers, but there is a lot more going on here than just color and pattern. The center of the dial is actually raised, with the striped quadrant design sitting higher than the outer donut section, and that height difference creates a subtle architectural transition across the dial. Around that raised center is a polished steel ring, followed by a transparent or semi-opaque donut-shaped ring that slightly mutes the outer section, softening the colors and adding more visual variation. That transition from raised center, to metal ring, to softened outer donut is beautifully handled, and it’s exactly the kind of detail that can disappear in a quick wrist shot but becomes obvious when you spend time with the watch. The top layer is CNC-machined from stainless steel, with precise ridges and openings that reveal the colored “pizza” segment underneath, so the dial has physical depth rather than just printed visual drama. Then the boxed sapphire crystal bends the geometry near the edges, turning straight stripes into subtle curves and giving the whole display a sense of motion as the seconds hand makes its way across the dial. Even the hands are well chosen: bold enough to remain visible over the busy dial, but not so loud that they destroy the graphic composition. I know this is going to be a very polarizing dial, but I think there are wonderful details here that speak to real design intent. The last time I posted about the Horizon Spectrum, I couldn’t stop praising the creative case design. @horizon_watches also managed to add a bracelet option to this package, and took on the challenge of integrating this bracelet into that very challenging case design. While they could’ve done with a “universal” style bracelet that resulted in a gap between case and bracelet, they came up with a pretty clever design that sits flush with the case but also doesn’t break up the case design. The bracelet itself is well finished, with comfortable links that articulate well and a push button release butterfly clasp. A custom designed rubber strap is also included that features an angular padded section at the lugs and tapers in thickness as you get closer to the clasp. And the clasp is a wonderful piece of design too, although it does wear a bit large since the strap doesn’t taper in width from lugs to buckle. #horizonwatches #watchreview

This one is definitely not going to appeal to everybody, but the Horizon Spectrum might just have one of the most interesting and creative case designs I’ve come across in a while. The lugs, the contours of the mid-case, the finishing styles across the different surfaces and even the way the lugs flow into the case-back, are all brilliantly considered. No surprise considering @fred_bekher’s vast experience designing watches for a lot of popular microbrands.
