Africa’s Ashiest Warrior by Dr. Joel Anthony Hamilton. Had the opportunity to read this for the Indie Ink Awards and owned a copy on kindle so I gave it a go. A title like that, and a cover this cool? I love sharks.

Ashburn is a great character, the general a solid mentor character. I particularly enjoyed that he didn’t just have all the answers. His training includes trying out multiple things, time on self reflection, and trial and error without anger from his superior. He is allowed to be a kid while still being shown how serious his powers are. Inquisitiveness is inspired, and self discovery proves paramount more than once in Ashburn’s journey. Still, there are some points that feel glazed over, some time jumps that felt they could be seen as rushed. If the author desired, the story could be lengthened into a fully fledged fantasy epic. I personally don’t think this expansion would need to span multiple books, but I definitely would have remained locked in for another hundred pages. Regardless, the story as it stands is worthwhile and a read I really enjoyed, I am in no way trying to detract from that.

The ending twist did surprise me a hell of a lot, but I do think some additional length would have lent itself to that emotional gut punch. The delivery of which is already solid. Then we get a bit of a training montage, as well as a blur of a year, and then it’s like we’re teaming up with the Young Avengers. For me, this was very awesome. It plays on how dire the situation is, how powerful and steadfast the young Mpiganaji wa Kuchoma are, and just how much they are willing to sacrifice to save the lands and peoples of Africa. It is an enticing level of stakes, and the author certainly delivers. I would be interested to see if there’s a sequel in the works, and I’d be stoked to read it.

For fans of superhero or superpowered stories. Of strong characters and uneven odds. Of urban and epic fantasies. This is a solid origin story, and you’ll be hoping for more.

The 2026 WriteHive Annual Conference took place last weekend, and it was a blast! Swipe to see the panels I attended and the ones I missed and plan to watch, slowly, over the rest of the summer. Being a panelist was a great time, too, and I hope to do it again in the future.

I did get a headache by Saturday evening because of watching so many videos, so I didn’t get to attend as many panels on Sunday as I wanted. But that’s the beauty of pre-recording so many of them. WriteHive makes the recordings available on YouTube later in the year, so head over to their YouTube channel and subscribe so you don’t miss them! And you can check out previous years’ panels and presentations, too.

Will I see you at WriteHive Con next year?

Hi, I’m Ange (A. M. Shilling), an indie author of horror, fantasy, and romance. In particular, I love writing about morally questionable people, their terrible circumstances, and how they manage to love one another despite it all. If that sounds interesting to you, check out my book, THE DEVOURING! The link to my site is in my bio.

I’m so happy to announce that I will be speaking on two separate panels at this year’s @write_hive conference! Swipe for a peek at the panels! I’m so excited. I don’t often get to focus on craft when I talk about my books (usually the focus tends to be more on identity), so this was a refreshing change! As an English major I could talk about the craft of writing all day. Analysing fiction is one of my favourite things.

The Writehive Annual Conference is virtual and free, which makes it extremely accessible to people. Please do check out the links on the Writehive page to see how you can attend. I hope to see you there (virtually)!

Join me this Friday in a LIVE informal discussion/Q&A with authors and animal experts @keshewrites and @jessicalewisauthor ! This will be a free online event hosted by @write_hive as part of their annual writing conference (there’s still time to grab a ticket!).

EDIT: the second slide should say July 10th - July 12th!

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love animals, and some of you may know that when I was very young, I would exclusively write stories featuring animal characters (they were all just knockoff Warriors stories, iykyk). I’m absolutely thrilled to be able to moderate this discussion, and hope to see you there <3

My Review here will not necessary reflects my score there.
I read and reviewed this Book as a Judge for Indie Ink Award and Indie Story Geek.

The genre is fantasy and myth. This book tells about friendship. Retelling story about The ancient King Prabu Siliwangi in West Java.

The main character is Sumaiyah Jackson. Her friends call her Neng, 13 years old girl who is living in Australia. She is from West Java, but she and her family live in Parramatta, Australia until a family drama spiral.

They were trapped in area in Siliwangi Residence. The place where Prabu Siliwangi detained. The passage says the choosen on descendant to set Prabu Siliwangi free from the curse. They go through the portal.

With Bapak Ipin 's help, the Portal literally sent them back to our roots. They unlocked an ancient secrets. They remembered Sri Baduga Museum with Uwak Basir 's story. Involving the black magic known Pesugihan, an invosion of Demons granting wealth to greedy person. He save from black magic. In the river, they found a dragon. Aminah and Rindu are also found there too.
They met Prabu Siliwangi, My Harimau King. They know his Eternal spirit. He can change to be White Harimau or White Tiger. But they don't free Prabu Siliwangi. Then Prabu Siliwangi return them to the real world through portal. They were grateful to meet Mamah and Uwak Basir. Their adventure prove the myths exist.
