Write Pittsburgh is a nonprofit that hosts writing workshops for teens, adults, the incarcerated, and those in recovery and transition.

How do we write about difficult subjects without reducing a character or a story to their pain? ✍️

Join us Saturday, October 24 at 10 am at the AHP office for Writing About Trauma with Grace Spulak, a two-hour workshop exploring how writers can approach trauma with nuance, complexity, and formal experimentation.

Drawing on the work of Gayl Jones, Maria Fernanda Ampuero, Monica Ojeda, and Marie-Helene Bertino, Grace will explore how elements of traumatic experience—memory gaps, flashbacks, repetition, and rumination—can become tools for narrative innovation. The class will also include a generative writing component and a supportive space to experiment with approaches to your own work.

Grace Spulak is the author of Magdalena Is Brighter Than You Think, winner of the 2025 Autumn House Press Rising Writer Prize.

Announcing three more workshops where you can learn to make a zine!

Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh (@pghkids) and Public Source are working together to engage people of all ages to create small, self-made zines that explore the people, places and experiences around us.

This is an open call: Submit your zine by Sept. 30 for a chance to have it included in the exhibit!

If you want to participate but don’t know where to start, we and our partners are hosting a series of workshops and events where you can make a zine, learn a new skill or get some inspiration.

You can see the full list of zine workshops and events on publicsource.org.

These reviews have me psyched! This is my jam!

"... breathtaking collection that is rooted in place, people, and the full scope of who you are and who you get to be. Exploring queerness, gender, poverty, generational trauma, and the ways in which we are formed and form others, the stories in this collection have the scope of sagas and the intimacy of untold secrets." - K-Ming Chang, author of Exhausted Monsters

"Grace Spulak is a courageous, daring storyteller who doesn’t look away from the most damaged, difficult, or tender subjects. They write unflinchingly about poverty in America, shining a light on broken systems and the crushing effects of capitalism on the poor and working class...Spulak writes about gender, queerness, desire, trauma, and violence in ways that feel dangerous and alive. These are difficult, important stories burning with truth. A wonderful new voice and debut collection.”
—Carter Sickels, author of The Prettiest Star

"Set in rural New Mexico - a place of strange beauty, isolation, and potential transformation - Grace Spulak's award-winning debut story collection explores the complexities of gender, queerness, trauma, and resilience through characters who live on the margins and imagine new ways to survive there."

✨ A Little Late, But Worth Sharing! ✨

I’m a little late letting y’all know, but I’m so excited to finally share that my poem “Something(s) Futuristic” was published in the Write Pittsburgh June 2026 anthology, WRITE Between: Imagining the Future! 📖✨

There’s something special about seeing your words move from the page you wrote them on into the hands of readers. I’m incredibly grateful to have my work included in this collection alongside so many talented writers.

Thank you, Write Pittsburgh, for creating a space where writers can imagine, create, and share what the future can look like through our words. 💛

📖 Read my piece, something (s) futuristic, and explore the creative work of other writers featured in WRITE Between: Imagining the Future, along with Write Pittsburgh’s past publications, here:
"Write Pittsburgh Publications" https://www.writepittsburgh.com/publications

Here’s to more poems, more publications, and more opportunities to let my words bloom. 🌻✍🏾

📚 🍄 🌈 ☀️ This July we are so grateful for the mycelial connections that bring us together! Celebrating an abundance of incredible literary offerings that grow beyond the page. We are excited to welcome author, educator, and mycophile, Maria Pinto @aravensgrace to Pittsburgh to share from her powerful new book, Fearless, Sleepless, Deathless: What Fungi Taught Me about Nourishment, Poison, Ecology, Hidden Histories, Zombies and Black Survival on Thursday, July 16th at 7pm at @whitewhalebks. She will be joined in conversation by local writer and illustrious fairy marsh monster Almah LaVon! @agentsubrosa

Naturalist, forager, and educator Maria Pinto offers a stunning debut book that uncovers strange and beautiful fungal connections between the natural and human worlds. She mingles reportage, research, memoir, and nature writing, touching on topics that range from Black farmers’ domestication of the unforgettable aroma of truffles to the possibility that enslaved people wielded mycological poisons against their enslavers. Pinto brings a new perspective and a distinctive literary voice to this mix of environmental and lived history, and every page sings with her enthusiasm for the networks in which we are embedded: fungal, ecological, ancestral, and communal. Join her in pursuit of beautiful, perplexing, delicious, and deadly mushrooms as she explores this understudied kingdom’s awe-inspiring diversity and discovers how fungi have been used by people, especially those on the margins, for survival, pleasure, revelation, and revolution.

White Whale Bookstore and the Flower Farm Residency are grateful to present this collaborative event with the support of @blackunicornlibraryproject, @cuttingroot, @dreamsofhopeorg, @writepittsburgh, @ujamaacollective15219, and @sibylsshrine. The reading & conversation is hosted by local artist, librarian, and educator, Bekezela Mguni.
