POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Yesterday I hit a block in the revisions of the book. It was more like a general block that I moved through but it was sluggish - so sluggish - and before I blamed myself for stumbling into the block I took time to be “in wonder” with it.

”I wonder if getting this close to the end is scaring me more than I want to confess to myself or anyone else?”

”I wonder why this happens over and over again: is it a choice or a chance to work through whatever beliefs and anti-compassionate self talk arises?)

”I wonder what would happen if I wrote into and through the sludge?”

In the Brene Brown’s “Braving the Wilderness” reading, the quote I am considering, walking with and brain dumping to is this: “No matter how separated we are by what we think and believe, we are part of the same spiritual story.”

At first I thought I was exploring “We are part of the same spiritual story” and then I saw that was simply a phrase, not a complete thought. The same spiritual story begins with the fissure that is evident everywhere we look in our world right now.

For today, I am going to simply be with the fissure.

96 more days in 2025. What are you willing to simply be with, sit with, breathe with, as this year we have been living comes to a close?

After a great conversation with @writertammy about “One Italian Summer”, I decided to do rereads of my favorite books of all time. What a pleasure to dive back into “The Blue Bistro” by @elinhilderbrand

The story follows Adrienne, who comes to Nantucket looking for work and ends up being the assistant manager for the final season of the islands hottest summer restaurant.

This book feels like what it really feels like to work at a restaurant. I love all the characters in this book and the way they feel like a found family. Plus, the Nantucket summer vibes are 10/10.

There’s romance and a bittersweet story of friendship. And oh my word, that scene where they are all sitting at the bar and Adrienne wants to go home and Karen says, “Stay because this is the last time we’ll ever be like this together.” Sob. I sob.

There’s so much heart and atmosphere in this story that you’d be doing yourself a disservice by not picking it up.

Oh. And the descriptions of food. Don’t read this book when you’re hungry. 😂

Where I’m From #93
By Tammy Evans
Inspired by George Ella Lyon

I’m from the seven-foot table where roast, boiled potatoes, and green stuff were served on Sundays.

I’m from a town I don’t claim even though it appears on my timeline twice.

I’m from Eight O-clock coffee beans ground in the grocery store and canned Pillsbury biscuits fried into donuts on the electric stove.

I’m from two households, not from divorce.

I’m from summer birthday pool parties on a dead end street that no one came to because they were on vacation.
I’m from a home next to my elementary school with the best playground equipment.
I’m from summer nights filled with fireflies.
I’m from swimming in the pool fresh from the hose filling it up.

I’m from winter nights, reading in front of the fire
I’m from games I could play independently.
I’m from a booth in the kitchen that didn’t hide the ugly wallpaper or my Stroh’s filled father asleep after day turns at the mill.
I’m from Bisquick pancakes, spaghetti made with a packet, cornbread from a box, and stew made in an electric skillet.
I’m from all-day coffee.

I’m from the kitchen closing with dishwashing before the 10 o’clock news.

I’m from the evergreen tree that only seemed to grow in photos that hid Easter eggs and bird nests.

I am from “It’s your responsibility” and “You don’t need a man.”
I’m from Ritter sport chocolate with hazelnuts sent from the fatherland that melted like sun on my tongue.
I’m from teenage marriage between parents who met at a skating rink who are still married.
I’m from looking at the clock every day at 12:34 no matter the time zone.
I’m from trips to the library and books, books, and books.
I’m from Christmas Eve at 6 o’clock with the bells from the church record and Santa.
I am not from southern Illinois like George.
I am not from the Ivy League.
I am not from Germany like Ingeborg and Stella.
I am not from the MFA.
I’m from all my experiences and reading, but not a certain place.

He was adept in the art of human relations, as long he was not interacting with close kin.
