The second sleeve I made for @secret7s earlier this year was for the song ‘Hope for the Future’ by Bastille. The song was written for the documentary ‘From Devil’s Breath’, about the devastating wildfires in Portugal in 2017. I watched it a couple of years ago and it really stayed with me. It’s completely heartbreaking but also hopeful, and the community who managed to turn their grief into momentum to demand policy reform and land management changes are incredible.

The film advocates for the restoration of complex biodiversity and natural resilience, rather than the planting of monocultures that exacerbated the fires. Having moved from the Lake District to the west coast of Scotland, I’ve often been struck by the lack of biodiversity in areas dominated by monoculture in both places - albeit different species to the highly flammable eucalyptus planted in Portugal.

This design is a snapshot of Atlantic oak woodland in spring: a globally rare, highly biodiverse ecosystem which must also be protected and restored. Like all mature, old-growth forests, these woodlands act as long-term carbon sinks helping to regulate climate, mitigate flooding and provide a complex habitat to support a vast array of species.

Spring always feels full of hope, with everything emerging, unfurling and growing. I loved making this and I hope wherever it has ended up it brings a little moment of springtime joy.

The design started as a monoprint to represent the overstory (side note - if you love great stories and/or trees ‘The Overstory’ by Richard Powers is an incredible book). Species include sessile and pedunculate oak, hazel, alder, downy birch and rowan.

Printmaking is new to me so figuring out a method, where everything should go, mixing up the right shades of green and not making a complete hash of it/getting fingerprints everywhere was a challenge!

I didn’t feel that the monoprint captured the biodiversity, so I made a flower press and had a go at pressing key species to represent the understory.

I’m a marine biologist, so I’m very at home rooting around in a rockpool, but much less familiar with plants so this was a really lovely excuse to wander through the woods, look re

We can’t wait to be playing the Misfits Together songs (the songs we’ve been working on for the last 6 years) at two Intimate shows in London & Manchester next year. Loads of new music to come between now and then. Tickets in our bio.

The Beatles may have strawberry fields, The Wombats may bring lemons even to a knife fight, but Misfits Together for me will be forever associated with tangerines 😁🍊🍊🍊
