It’s Publication Day!! 💜

After more than 15 years of radicchio obsession, I’m so excited that TODAY Radicchio: A Celebration of the Beloved Italian Vegetable is out in the world.

More than 15 years ago, I began exploring crops we could grow in the cold months to help build a thriving local winter market in the Pacific Northwest. That work led me to radicchio, and down a joyful rabbit hole of traveling to Italy, wandering through radicchio fields, sharing countless meals, and learning from farmers (🙏🏽 @myrthazierock @farmersiri @jasonsalvo ) breeders (🙏🏽 @smarties.bio), chefs, historians, and home cooks.

Along the way, a community of radicchio lovers in the Pacific Northwest and Italy helped bring this beautiful bitter vegetable into the spotlight. This book grew out of that community. 💜

Coauthored with Margarett Waterbury (@margarett_maria) and filled with Shawn Linehan’s beautiful photography (@shawnlinehan), the book explores radicchio’s history, culture, botany, growing and cooking. It shares recipes and stories from chefs, farmers and grandmothers in Italy and the United States.

It’s the first in-depth book dedicated entirely to radicchio, and I hope it inspires more people to grow it, cook it, eat it and fall in love with it as I have.

Find it at your local independent bookstore, wherever books are sold online or at one of our events this radicchio season!

So much gratitude to Margarett, Shawn, publisher @timberpress, editor @makenna_good, agent @theosheaagency, cover designer @theevincentjames , recipe tester @emilyrpark, illustrator @wrkstd and the entire chicory community for making this book possible. 🥬💜

Just a few photos of yesterday’s super fun 6th annual TOMATO FEST at @wellspentmarket

More in depth coverage to come. I was barely able to leave my booth to see the rest of the action so these are mostly people passing by that caught our eye.

Portland loves tomatoes and fans showed up in droves with ‘mater funk and flash. Standing in long lines to taste Jim Myers’ latest breeding lines, grab the best BLT in town, talk with and support all the growers and makers with booths, learn about buckwheat and just party together in the street!

Thanks all for coming out! Next up is Sagra del Radicchio e Fagioli on October 24th. Get your tickets before they sell out!

SWEDEN ON FILM. I just got film photos back from my family’s trip to Sweden (and Copenhagen and Vienna) this past spring and the images feel surreal they feel so real. An odd by-product of digital life. It’s really like our little family’s experience was perfectly imprinted, translated through our Leica, capturing sweet moments with dear friends. Film is beautiful.

The friends we visited in Övraby, the agrarian region of Skåne, is in the southern part of Sweden, set against gentle rolling hills, farms, artist studios, and just 10 minutes from the beach. Becky, Lars and their son Arvid welcomed us into their beautiful 1860’s farmhouse-turned home. They are artists who work together under a couple of different monikers — Werkstad @wrkstd, Beck Projekt @beckprojekt, and Poster Skola @posterskola. Becky is a talented art director and designer who brings in Lars’ masterful artwork to create a vision that feels distinct and crafted. They also work separately when called to. You can see their work at www.beckprojekt.com as well.

We made food (or, truly, Becky and Lars fed us lavishly and made flat whites with lovely designs in the foam; we did some dishes), we talked, we beached, we flew kites, the kids played tag, we visited the 12th century church next door, and found architectural gems that are spotted around the region. Most notable (to me) being the Mariavall Abbey near Tomelilla by Dom Hans van der Laan, completed in 1991. I even snuck a photo of the tiniest nun I’ve ever seen locking a door in the abbey — when she turned and saw me, she raised her hands around her and looked around and then back to me as if to say, “can you even believe we get to be here?”. I truly could not.

More photos, including this tiny nun, on the Journal page of our website. Link in bio of course.

🌱 Variety Showcase Spotlight: Rosé Cabbage 🌱

Join us at @glynwoodorg on August 30 as Chef Alex Raij of @txikitonyc & @lavarany creates a dish featuring plant breeder Phillip Griffiths’ stunning unreleased rosé cabbage.

Originally from southeast Wales, “Griff” came to the U.S. in the early 1990s and earned his PhD in vegetable breeding at the University of Florida. Since joining Cornell University in 1999, he has focused on breeding Brassica crops, beans, and tomatoes, developing varieties that are not only productive but novel and delicious.

His work aims to reinvent how we think about vegetables, introducing vibrant new colors and forms that delight growers, chefs and eaters alike.

Among his latest breeding projects are rosé cabbage, golden and Tuscan broccoli, chili pepper-shaped tomatoes, colorful leafy brassicas, and mini kidney beans, with new varieties being trialed and introduced around the world.

Come meet Griff and Alex, learn about the breeding behind this beautiful brassica, and be among the first to taste rosé cabbage at Variety Showcase.
