The idea for “Black Lake,” originally written as a play called “Lake George,” came to writer/director Dan Blick somewhat randomly. Although, as he says, “I’m sure it had been subconsciously birthed long before that.”

Blick and Mitchell Pope, co-founders of Telos Ensemble (Blick and Pope’s production company), had booked the Chain Theatre for November 2024 to stage Blick’s play “Akrasia.”

But as the date approached, Blick started to feel it wasn’t his best work. He called Pope to tell him he wasn’t sure about moving forward with it.

That same night, he wrote the first scene of “Lake George,” which would later become “Black Lake.”

“The idea was literally born because I was reading a short piece of prose that I had written a while back, and I found it incredibly pretentious,” Blick explains.

He started with a writer reading that prose and his wife criticizing him, leading to a conversation “about the delicacies of sharing one’s work.”

From there, one scene led to another. The family dynamic began to emerge, and the circumstances of the characters started to take shape.

Blick describes his writing process as starting with a single line rather than mapping out the story in advance. In this case, it started with:

“I don’t like it.”

He thinks this relates to the acting method he studied, “trying to find something that’s true in the moment and working from that, rather than forcing it.”

Much of Blick’s work comes from trying to understand why we do what we do. For “Black Lake,” he started with what felt true to him in the moment, then let the circumstances come to him: a dissatisfied couple struggling after a miscarriage. From there, he was inspired piece by piece, adding to the family dynamic with a sister, an absent father, and more.

A few days later, Blick called Pope and told him about the new play he was writing. They decided to replace “Akrasia” with “Lake George” for the November production.

We soft-launched the BluePhoto collective last month to do two things: Help people find amazing images for their walls and help photographers keep more money in their pockets. Guess what? It’s working. (We just sold another photo this morning!)
Today, we’re announcing BluePhoto gift cards, and as we head into the holidays, look for more news and offers.

Thanks to all the BluePhoto.co photographers and to @laundrymenprod for the video.
