The National Association of Minority Landscape Architects (NAMLA) is a 501(c)(3) organization founded in Los Angeles, California in 2020. The premise for starting the organization is based on increasing minority representation at all levels of landscape architecture practice and academia. As a young grass-root non-profit organization, we could not go this far without the generosity of our donors. We would like to give a big shoutout to our generous donors for supporting our daily operations and programs. Thank you @andreacochranlandscape @sitio.la @kensmithworkshop @scape_studio @wrtdesign

💡To learn more about donors, please visit our new web page for donation recognition at www.nationalamla.org/donorsandsponsors

💛Every dollar counts, your support, big or small, will help us continue and expand our services to elevate minorities in landscape architecture.

As we begin to celebrate Earth Day, we’d like to highlight the work and passion of Newark resident Nicole Miller, a communications professional and principal of MnM Consulting. Nicole is committed to raising awareness on issues related to air quality, green infrastructure, stormwater, climate change, and other environmental concerns affecting Newarkers. She advises the City’s Environmental Commission on sustainability issues, chairs the Newark Green Team, co-chairs NewarkDIG (Doing Infrastructure Green), and was an active voice in the Newark360 planning process.

“Newark is an excellently positioned city with an international airport and one of the largest ports in the nation,” she said. “Billions of dollars of commerce go through Newark every single week. How are the people of Newark benefiting from that and how are they paying the price for it? Both of those questions need to be considered. Then we can make Newark the best that it can be for the people who live here now, as well as the generations to come.”

One of Nicole’s favorite environmental success stories in Newark is Hawthorne Avenue Farm, a 3-acre site that was formerly an open lot awaiting construction of a new school. The new school was never built, so instead of letting it sit barren, it became a space for the community, producing local, pesticide-free produce. Today the farm has 85 production rows, and 130 fruit trees in the orchard. There is a school garden used to teach local students, a large strawberry patch, a trellis garden, and 260 raised garden beds, available to community members to grow their own vegetables.

“The Newark360 process is a great opportunity to draw people’s attention to how urban planning plays into their everyday lives,” she said. “It’s the job of the people who live here to make sure it’s the best that it can be but also to protect it.”

Tucked away in Sonoma Wine Country’s town of Windsor we are working on a new public art installation.

In collaboration with San Francisco architect Jacob Tobias, we outfitted the Windsor downtown roundabout with lights inspired by the night sky.

Nestled amongst the rocks, the slow moving light patterns aspire to capture the changing of the seasons and celestial objects.
