He had a stroke years before, and by 2010 he could no longer play them himself. That's why there was no letter.

He sent them to me because he knew I wouldn't change a single note. That I'd honour them exactly as he wrote them.

It took me five years to start. Not only because they were difficult. Because to sit down and learn them was to accept that he wasn't going to play them ever again, and I wasn't ready to know that.

Eddie died in 2021.

I'm Éilís Ní Chríocháin, a traditional Irish fiddle player, and one of a handful of musicians in the world playing purely in the East Galway Irish Music Tradition (EGIMT). I'm the custodian of Eddie Kelly's compositions. I teach them, I write about them and the time I spent learning from him and I record them, so this stays a living tradition rather than an archive.

Draíocht: And Then The Quiet, my third album and my memoir, are coming later this year. Both were inspired by that envelope.

Follow for the tunes, the tradition, and the stories behind them.

Welcome — I'm a traditional Irish fiddle player from Ballintubber, County Roscommon. This tune is the one that opens my first album. Though it isn't quite called what I called it.

The man who taught me was Eddie Kelly. I was twelve when I started going to his sitting room, and I kept going for years. He gave me tunes, and he gave me the stories that came with them. Hours of them.

He never once told me he composed. There were twenty-one of his own, and I only found them afterwards, in his manuscripts. I wrote a book about him.

The names on this tune have been drifting for a hundred and fifty years and nobody minds. That's how Irish music has always survived. Not written down. Handed over.

I’m a traditional Irish fiddle player from Ballintubber, County Roscommon. Eddie was my teacher. I was twelve when I started going to his sitting room, and I kept going for years.
The style he gave me is the East Galway Irish Music Tradition — slow, lonesome, never meant for dancing. Very few people play it now.
Those twenty-one tunes he never mentioned became an album. There’s a book about him too, and another album and memoir coming.
