Never forget where you came from! Love you Uncle Sherman and I appreciate what you’ve done for me! Thank you! #usawrestling #californiawrestling

I wouldn’t be involved in the sport of wrestling the sport I love and enjoy so dearly without these two men right here. If you don’t already know them, let me introduce you.

To the top left is my great uncle, Ashlee Sherman the man who took my brothers and me into his home when no one else would. To the top right is my uncle Jessie the man who made sure we had the best wrestling gear, who also took us to tournaments, coached us, and trained us.

Growing up in Oakland, California a city surrounded by poverty, drugs, and prostitution I shouldn’t be standing here today. We hear so much negativity about Oakland and the Bay Area, but this is the side people don’t talk about. The love. The sacrifice. The people who step up.

The way the system is set up, I should be locked up in someone’s private prison or laid to rest in a graveyard. But by the grace of God, and because of my great-uncle and uncle Jessie, look where I am now.

Thirty years later, I’m still enjoying the sport that kept me out of trouble. A sport that shaped me into the man I am today. A sport that taught me discipline, resilience, and how to protect myself. A sport that pushed me to get up and keep going through every challenge life throws my way. A sport that allowed me to give back to the community I’m now a part of. A sport that introduced me to so many kind, loving people.

This is bigger than wrestling. This is legacy. This is family. This is what saved my life.
